Hmmm. See, if it's a collection of pre-existing songs by various artists I don't really think of it as a "soundtrack". I know stores classify them that way, but to me "soundtrack" means original music writen specifically for that movie.

However, if you're talking compilation soundtracks, Ocean's Eleven (the Clooney version) is damn good.

So is Nacho Libre.

For original music, Dark City has an awesome soundtrack.

Star Trek: First Contact had a ****ing SWEET soundtrack.

Oh, and X-Men. Michael Kamen is good.

Master and Commander was great.

When I think of Soundtrack, I think of both. I think the background music (pre-existing songs by various artists) can tell a story just as much as an original score...best example of that for me - The Big Chill

another point I wanted to address with this.

If a film is a biography (see: Bird, Ray) then there's not much room if any for any 'new' original material. Therefore, a soundtrack of all previously recorded material by the deceased is really the only compilation you can have. In some cases, like with Bird, they left Parker's stuff alone, and used current musicians for all of the accompanying roles.

I think the same kind of goes for a film that is taking place in a past time period, where you kinda use music of that time to help with the setting. Not as much of a place for new original material as well.

Besides, as original material goes nothing is worse than putting Disney/Dreamworks together with Randy Newman. :D
