View Full Version : Question on adding an additional hard drive

It's another internal drive I stole off a spare computer (my drive was starting to act funny, so I though I could back it up on the spare drive). When I start, it keeps putting my old drive as the E: drive and the new as the C: drive. I want the old drive to remain the C: drive. I've changed the jumpers a few times, making the new drive the slave and changed the old drive to "enable cable select" after leaving it on "master or single drive" didn't work. The bus (whatever it's called) is marked for "master" and "slave" and the drives are hooked up to it accordingly. Is there something I'm missing (obviously)?

BTW, I tried to just give up on this idea, but windows won't load properly when I take the newer drive back out. It hangs on my desktop wallpaper with no icons loaded.

Make them both cable select, and be sure you have them cabled correctly.

I'll try that. If I'm not back soon, it didn't work. :)

It didn't work. Still has them lettered backwards (but it boots correctly).
Problem is, it's looking for programs on the C: drive, which has now been labeled E:, so it can't find them. I can probably change it, but I was hoping there'd be a better way.

are they on separate cables ?

Check the cable connections. sometimes they're specific for Master and Slave drives.

Yes mistress.

No. One cable.

They're labeled and appear to be connected correctly. I never unplugged the first drive, so it should have always been hooked to the "master" cable. But the labels match the way I want the drives hooked up.

I'm wondering if I shouldn't just switch them anyway and see what happens.

What could it hurt?

Wait! Don't answer that.

I don't know if this will help or not, but in XP there is a way to change the drive letters around in disk management. Right click on the My Computer icon, select manage. In the left pane there will be a Disk Management icon under Storage. You can then right click the on the actual drive and there is an option to change the drive letters and paths.

If you decide to get a new drive, seagate has a utility that will clone your failing drive to your new drive.

I just used it and it worked very well

BTW doc, If your hard drive is failing the best thing to do is go aahead as slave it and recover all the data on it that you want. Then trash the failing thing before you are tempted to use it again.

I can do that for ya if you could help me with these sinus and tension headaches I get:D

I changed the letter of the drive. It's not a drive anymore. I may be in trouble. :(

If I get a new drive, will it clone my version of Windows onto the new drive as well?

I think the problem is related to the drives or their connections. Additional possibilities would include operator error.

YWIA.

Not once I got through with it. It now exists with the hard drive as well.
So there.

Computer Masters (they must be good) now have my work computer. We'll see what happens. BTW, this is the first time in 15 years I've had to take a computer to a computer-fixer guy. I'm disappointed in the SO.
Duck your heads in shame.
