to peel an orange?

Are there any tools or mechanical devices that do the work for me?

Is digging your thumb into the pulp just a hazard of eating an orange?

I bite them to get a spot to start peeling, but that isn't much better unless you like bitter orange flavor.

Use M's tool.

Use a spoon to peel it... don't need to buy no special tool.

Mess? A handful of peels is a mess? sheesh. Just leave it on the counter and tell the kids to throw it away for you, that is what I do.

the mess comes in the act of digging my fingers in between the peel and the orange. inevitably, i go to deep and get orange juice everywhere.

Run the orange under some hot water first. This seems to separate the peel from the flesh and makes it a lot easier to peel by hand.

OK, so if you aren't going with the twinkies and insist on sticking with the oranges, just quarter them, that way you can do this:

Or you could be like Brando in the Godfather. That is why I never do that. I don't want to fall over dead in the termaters.

Physics is what makes it work. By warming the outside of the orange, you're causing the peel to expand and pull away from the flesh.

You'd have to check the archives, but I'm pretty sure there's a neat application using coolwhip tubs there.

Run it under hot water. The peel and the pulp come off easily.

Florida Cracker method.
So easy you will wonder why you didnt figure it out yourself.

cut a slice off of both top and bottom of orange.
then cut 6-8 vertical slices from top to bottom just cutting through the rind and into the body of the orange.
The slices of rind then peel off rather easily.
then the segments of orange come apart rather easy.

works with fresh off the tree or chilled oranges just as easily.

takes about a half a minute.
