Calling all computer nerds, non-computer nerds, fellow beerdrinking olevet, and...well everyone on here.
My trial version of Norton expired, so I installed the free cox virus protection today. Apparently that was a terrible move on my behalf because my internet has never been so slow. Not since the old "AOL dial-up days".
My question is this...what virus protection do you all use and/or recommend. The Norton seemed to be pretty good stuff, but I'm on a tight budget right now and wanted to try out the cox freebie. I had Mcafee in the past and recall it really draggin my old system down.
Help, tips, recommendations appreciated. Thank you

McAfee is great. I do use AVG on my other system.
I also recomend using Ad-Aware and Zone Alarm (both free).

Same here, I got so tired of the Norton bloat and having to call them monthly to get the authorization cleared on copies that I purchased directly from them that I switched to AVG with 6 months left on Norton. It is cheaper, easier and with multiple computers it is definitely cheaper.

I use AVG as well. Tried Avast but it crashed my computer and just made the computer do some weird stuff.

Thanks. So far it looks like AVG is the way to go.
Nothing drives me more nuts than waiting forever for my browsers to open, pages to refresh and even load, etc.
Right now it's taking at least 2 minutes for my IE to open from the icon on my desktop when I click it. All this started when I installed cox virus suite.

Okay, so I'm trying out the AVG. Do I want to leave my "windows firewall" on still?

If you find that not to your liking, try avast (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html) home edition. I've been using this software for about 4 years now. Easy to install & updates quite often.

I use AVG - I have Vista on my PC and the firewall is on.

The PC and internet seem to run fine, no viruses, no problems so far.

Concur with the AVG. Make sure you get the AVG Spyware as well. Check out Kim Komando's website (http://www.komando.com/downloads/categories.aspx?cat=Security) for lots of other freeware security ****.

Trend Micro if you're willing to pay
(just the standard edition, covers up to 3 computers too)

if you want free, go AVG

It's gotta be better than the crap that cox uses. It took me about 10 minutes to realize it was a mistake using theirs today. Bogged my system WAY down.

I pay for the AVG Internet Security Suite (http://www5.grisoft.com/doc/products-avg-internet-security-b/us/t2/0), the Two Year/Five Computer Subscription is $169.95. That is quite a bit cheaper than what Norton would have for been for 2-Years/5-Computers back when I was buying it and I was getting a renewal price on Norton.
