I have a "Protruding disk". It is pushing against the nerves, which is causing the leg pain. They are sending me to an Orthepedic specialist, don't know when my appointment is yet. I'm too young for this crap.

I also have a protruding...oh, you said disk.

Had a friend go through this stuff...don't remember it being much fun for him at all. His pain was in his left arm & shoulder though. Good luck.

Guy I know eventually had surgery after trying all the other "less invasive" procedures.

I figure they'll start with sterriod shots, as they did with my mom. Hopefully mine isn't serious enough for surgery right now

I had the same surgery in July....L4 and L5 were ruptured. Hopefully you won't have to endure any of that. Let me know.

I had the exact same thing too. Exactly. Tried chiro, steroid injections, pain pills, all of it. The leg pain was excruciating. Finally decided to have the surgery in October. It was pure hell. But I am all better, no more leg pain, no more pills, no more treatment. Every once in a while I will feel a twang in my butt or leg, but generally, so far so good. Took two and half months after the surgery though to be pain free, drug free.

I walk very very very carefully across ice and slippery places now days.

hey chick, was the leg pain in the back or front of your leg? my mom's was down the back of her leg, which was the sciatic, but mine is on the front of my thigh.....

I have a ruptured disc at L4-L5 and I'm having back surgery next month. I have had two steroid shots (ripoff) taken Methylprednisolone, Ultram ER, Vicodin, Lortab, Percocet, Percodan, and Tylox. I finally threw the pills in the garbage and scheduled the surgery for next month.

I told my sister in confidence that I would rather die today then live with this type of pain in my back and legs. My quality of like has really suffered and the things that I used to do as recreation, hobby, and entertainment have turned into me laying flat on my stomach wherever I can, to find comfort because that's the only time that I feel somewhat pain free. Driving an automobile is the worst! I'm 37 years old and as a Garth Brooks song goes... "I'm Much Too Young To feel This Damn Old."

Best of luck and I'll keep you in my prayers.

Do you ever feel it in your belly button?

Civicus_Sooner
1/22/2008, 11:18 AM
How does that type of thing happen to you? Old injury or new? I'm really worried that may be something that is going on with me but I haven't "hurt" myself in quite some time.

I don't know when it happened. The doc said when it's ready, a simple thing such as sneezing or bending over to get the paper will cause it to go. My pain started around Jan 3 or 4, thought it was a kidney infection at first based on where the pain is, then it only got worse and my leg started hurting so I knew I needed some help.

Gawd, I hate Dr.'s. I actually had one Dr. say that 60% of the time they have no idea what causes pain.

Back surgery is always elective. You go until you cain't stand it no mo, and then you go under the knife.

I've had 2 friends go in for surgery for back issues (cervical). Both had great results.

Don't discount the steroid shots. They work for lots of folks, just not everyone.

I tend to send backs to Neurosurgeons. Just my choice, usually either are okay.
I only know the ones in MWC, if your interested. (You'd love Dr. Chris Barry. He's a neurosurgeon here in MWC.)

I had a friend highly recommend Dr. Barry and he agreed to see me if I needed because I had so many complications after my surgery.

I will peem you my surgeon who I would highly recommend you NOT go to.

I had problems in the same area of my back, with shooting pains down my left leg. I had two rounds of steroid shots last Feb, and haven't had the pain return. I get some tingling/numbness in my left leg, but it seems to get better when I walk. It was weird going to the outpatient clinic and being the youngest patient by probably 40 years or more.

Now that you mention it, I do. But I do not think that has anything to do with what we are talking about here.

Just curious Doc, why so?
I don't know. To simplify things, the spine basically has bony vertebrae and the spinal cord. In that area, the nerves just seem more important than the bones, IMO. I've known at least one ortho who specializes in spines and he was excellent.
Basically, I don't feel very strongly one way or another, but, given a choice, I choose the neurosurgeon.

Doc is right on this one but you had better find a good one! I'm using Benjamin White outta Mercy. He has a long history at OU on the research side of things and came to Mercy recently I believe in a surgical capacity. He comes highly recommended but only time will tell.

The irony of my whole back issue is that the day it happened, I was supposed to play golf at Rose Creek with a bunch of FGI buddies on the innerweb. My wife had just flown in and all of her work stuff was being delivered and I decide to help her instead. So, instead of smashing a little white golf ball, I was throwing 150lb boxes around just like I did in high school. Only, I'm not a spring chicken anymore and injured it at that point I believe.

Irony is a bit** sometimes.

All I know is, if I need my back cut upon, I'd rather have someone called "surgeon" than someone called, for instance, "podiatrist". ;)
