An acquaintence of mine in Birmingham suffered the tragic accidental death of his youngest child this weekend. The little guy got out of the house and fell into their pool where he drowned.

Here's the thing, this is a great guy. Yep, I admit I gave him a ration-o-crap when he said we did'nt deserve to be in the BCS championship game the year Auburn went undefeated, but that was just smack talk.

Rick Burgess is a great human. He played his college ball at Troy. He's a person of deep faith and conviction, and a lot of folks listen to his syndicated radio show every weekday morning. I do myself (online) while preparing my "Good Morning" missives. (I wish it was on the radio in Oklahoma because people would love the show.)

Rick is the guy on the left

Having endured the loss of a child ourselves, I know his faith is really being put to the test. In the end, he strikes me as the kind of Christian whose faith will be stronger after this is past.

Anyhoo, if you feel like, post a message to this address:
[email protected]

Someday, I bet he and his family will sit down and read them all and it would be special to read notes from people far away who didn't even know them.

A very good friend of mine with the last name Burgess lives just outside of Birmingham. I wonder if they're related.

Very sad though.

The year Auburn went undefeated was 2004. OU was undefeated going into the Orange Bowl vs. USC after the 2004 season.

And obviously a minor point in relation to the actual meaning of the thread. My condolences to your friend for his loss.

Rick and Bubba's telling of the Wanda and Willie story is one of the funniest things I've ever heard. This is heartbreaking.

I tried to email him, but after going through a loss like that, I really don't know what to say to him. I know that simply offering sympathy helps, but for some reason, I'm having a hard time getting the thoughts down. I may try to write him later.
Homey, let him know that all of us feel for his loss.

That's incredibly sad. I'm not sure I could cope with the death of one of my children. Please let him know that thoughts and prayers are being sent his way.

A few more details have emerged.

Dad was out of town on business when he got the news. Can you imagine the trip home?

Mom had parked the three boys in front of a DVD while she took a quick shower. In that amount of time, the two-year old managed to get out of the house and fall in the pool. When she discovered him, he was unconscious.

Obviously, that is not the main thing right now, but people with little kids and pools need to be hyper-vigilant. Those things are tyke magnets.
