November 2, 1983
A bill designating a federal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (to be observed on the third Monday of January) is signed by President Ronald Reagan. King was born in Atlanta in 1929, the son of a Baptist minister. He received a doctorate degree in theology and in 1955 King organized the first major protest of the civil rights movement: the successful Montgomery Bus Boycott. Influenced by Mohandas Gandhi, he advocated nonviolent civil disobedience of the laws that enforced racial segregation. I will be getting all active at the mall.

J/k, I have the lil one today and it's cold as ... well, you know, so my options are limited. That is a cool concept. Too bad, this is the first that I have heard about it.

Thoreau was also an influence...although not as popular to reference as Ghandi.

Sleep
Sleep tonight
And may your dreams
Be realized
If the thunder cloud
Passes rain
So let it rain
Rain down on me
Mmm...mmm...mmm...
So let it be
Mmm...mmm...mmm...
So let it be
Sleep
Sleep tonight
And may your dreams
Be realized
If the thundercloud
Passes rain
So let it rain
Let it rain
Rain on me

He had a dream. Bono had a song. Like Reese's PB Cups, Peas & Carrots, etc. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HY-WfDPm7s)

DALLAS, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- A Dallas minister who marched with civil rights leader the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., said Monday's birthday observance holiday is an insult to his legacy.

The Rev. Peter Johnson, 62, director of the Texas operations for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, told The Dallas Morning News the holiday should be on April 4, the anniversary of the date King was assassinated.

"We have ignored the essence of his life and the horror of his death," said Johnson. "We've allowed white America to escape the guilt of his assassination and we've allowed black America to drift back into a coma."

Johnson said King is considered a martyr by many but said, if he were alive, he would be considered an agitator by many people, the newspaper said.

"We remember him with parades and galas and banquets, things that are really irrelevant and silly regarding Dr. King's legacy," he said. "If we really want to honor Dr. King, we should do something about people who live under bridges. That would be a great tribute."

I kind of agree with the last paragraph. However, I'm pretty sure it's like-minded people who forced the government into having a federal holiday and have continued to sue states and threaten repercussions if MLK day isn't observed. Wasn't Arizona being threatened with not hosting a Super Bowl if they didn't observe it? Now everyone's being told how to observe it too. Kinda gets on my nerves.

Arizona lost a Super Bowl for not observing the holiday in the early 90s.

I used my day on to install a new bathroom faucet for the wife.

I would rather celebrate April 4th. From Washington's Birthday to Memorial Day is a long time without a holiday.
