drive up to Mt Rose and lake Tahoe. despite all the over-development and BS, the lake is still pretty amazing. and the North Shore is still pretty cool. the view from the top pf Squaw Valley (you can buy the tram ride) is killer. the Sierras rawk.

one of the best pizzas i've ever had is at Peluso's on the North Shore/King's Beach. thin, perfect. cappicola, red onion and chili pepper. yeah, dawg.

edit: now, Andy Peluso made this particular pizza for me and my bud (local) for us. but, Peluso's is the shizz.

You could always shoot a man to watch him die while you are there.

I agree about Lake Tahoe. My wife and I went to South Lake Tahoe for our Honeymoon. It was a good time. And if you're a "site seeing" person, it would be a cool trip. We spent one whole day driving all the way around the lake and stopping at certain areas to site see. One area that was a cool stop was the site where the Donner party got stuck in the snow. Off the top of my head I think it takes about 40 minutes to get to South Lake Tahoe from Reno (In good weather that is). And there's some casinos, ski slopes, good restaurants etc. there in South Lake. Anyways, that's my 2 cents

Is that the only reason you'd shoot a man? :D

Oh never mind.

The Lake Tahoe option is a great idea. Get a cheap steak dinner in Sparks just east of Reno, and Circus Circus has a great couple of shows.

I'll echo the sentiments on Tahoe. It's one of the most beautiful lakes you'll ever see, & if you like to fish at all, it's worth looking up a guide. Last time we were there, me & the wife caught Lakers 'till our arms were ready to fall off.

Driving around the lake is likely not an option this time of year. Snowstorms in the Sierras are measured in feet, not inches...the highway to Emerald Bay and SLT is almost always closed. If you want to go to SLT, you have to do it from the git-go as you can't really meander your way there.

King is right, North Shore has it's cool places, especially if you want to ski. No better place in the world to drive up, rent some equip and ski for 1/2 day as there are incredibly affordable ski areas and most face somewhat to the West, allowing for longer day skiing than most Colorado resorts. Plus, except for Sugar Bowl and Squaw, you can almost always see the lake while you are skiing.

Virginia City is a short drive from Reno and is worth seeing. When you see the signs along the highway pointing down side roads and they say "Welcome to KittyCat Ranch" or something to that effect...no, they aren't wrangling kittens there...

Oh and I left out the boat trip around the lake. There's one of those glassbottom boats that runs you around the lake and takes you to a coule neat areas, that's worth doing too. Now that I'm talking about all this, makes me want to go back!
