Is Shawshank really a cult film?

frankensooner
1/17/2008, 01:19 PM
Frank Darabont's subversive, allegorical, and life-affirming prison story about two life-sentenced prisoners, The Shawshank Redemption (1994), based upon a Stephen King story, failed at the box-office during its original release, but established a strong cult following its video release.

Catfish, sorry I left off The Bicycle Thief, but I was trying to avoid foreign language films. ;)

I think I could've had over a hundred!

I had to do a multiple selection - couldn't help it, just too many good ones to select.

Thus, my choices are:
Dawn of the Dead - omg, how could this NOT be on my list? The b/w photography makes this so much better than the latter versions.

Scanners - the man's head exploding - need I say more?

Billy Jack - Oh, to have a black hat like BJ. What a dichotomy, the hero wears a BLACK hat! The acting and dialogue were .... well, they were memorable!

Unlisted: Porky's - The howling girl's gym teacher, Balbricker grabbing Tommy's hoohoo, PeeWee running down the road naked, and of course, Porky, himself!

Usual Suspects doesn't count. It won two Oscars. Same thing for Shawshank. That movie won SEVEN Oscars. Most definitely NOT a cult classic... but a great movie. I knee jerk voted for it based on it being a good movie, but I forgot about how mainstream it is.

I think Spinal Tap should cover the Christopher Guest comedies, but Best in Show is some greatness. I just wouldn't consider it a "cult classic". Spinal Tap? Definitely.

Swingers, Office Space, High Fidelity, Donnie Darko... all solid write ins. There were some others, but I forget.

I'm incredibly disappointed that ED:2 DBD only received 2 other votes besides myself. Without a doubt THE best cult classic in the horror genre. You people are missing out on some CLASSIC scenes. Sam Raimi at his best. See? You don't even understand Bri's sig...

I also vote to add "The Last Dragon". Who's the mastah? SHO NUFF!

KC and Ron don't know what cult films are!!!

hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

"The term cult film is used to describe a film that has had little to no success commercially and critically upon its initial release but has later spawned a small, but devoted and usually obsessive fanbase. The term was first coined in the early 1980s in the book Cult Movies, by Danny Peary and is continued to be used to describe the films to this day. Usually, cult films have limited but very special, noted appeal. Cult films are often known to be eccentric, and do not follow traditional standards of mainstream cinema and usually explore topics not considered in any way mainstream—yet there are examples that are relatively normal. They are often considered controversial because they step outside standard narrative and technical conventions known."

Any movie that you can see on TBS or FX over a hundred times in a calendar year is not a cult film.

Thanks for playing, slappy.;)

I know this is a weird choice, but according to the criteria laid out by KC (which I agree with), Overboard might get consideration. However his statement about it being viewed on TBS would negate it... The only reason I say is b/c it was a commercial AND critical flop when it came out, and only gained popularity years after it came out.

Also, TBL is played on various channels throughout the year, but it is most definitely a cult classic. Any film not Star Wars/Trek that has an annual event surrounding it where people dress up as the characters is in.
