View Full Version : Home Wireless Network Issue

Howzit

I'm having a weird issue on one of the two PCs on my home network. Out of the clear blue, yesterday almost all url's seem to be blocked on one of the machines, and the message below is displayed.

http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/695/verizonmessageof8.jpg

To me that looks like the router has the url set up to be blocked under the parental controls, but nothing is.

Not all url's are blocked, there are a few seemingly random sites that work, and it's always the same ones.

The other machine is fine, all url's work.

The wireless card is seeing the router and there is an excellent signal strength. Email works in and out.

I called Verizon and they said it's the Norton firewall. Yes, I know Norton sucks, let's ignore that for now.

After hanging up with Verizon, I turned the Firewall and every type of Norton protection I could find off and the problem persisted. I called Norton, and he he suggested uninstalling it, which I did, and the problem persisted.

The problem exists in both IE and Firefox. Yeah, I'm grasping at straws.

Anything I am not thinking of? Any ideas, before I enjoy another splendid evening on the phone waiting to converse with Rajish from Verizon?

TIA

Norton DOES suck

sounds like spyware possibly. i'd look at your hosts file and make sure there isn't something goofy, as well as your proxy settings in the browser. i wouldn't think that there should be any...
does this affect both browsers? (tell me you are using Firefox ;))

on the sites that don't work, i'd try pinging the host, ie... "www.yahoo.com" and seeing if the IP address matches on the two machines

are you *sure* this computer is on your wireless network? I get 'excellent' signal strength to all my neighbor's wifi networks. And most of them aren't secured.

Wish I would've known that BEFORE I bought a wireless router..

Pretty sure, like I said, I can hit a handful of sites, and I have been using this network configuration for a year and half.

I'd suggest running ad-aware or some other spyware app to see if your computer is infected.

Didn't try the 2nd, we really don't use it much, it's just a secondary and I'm not even sure the printer driver is installed on it. I could try that, but I'm pretty sure the problem machine is on the network.

just trying to isolate it...

what are some sites that work and some that don't?

if the wireless PC was on a neighbor's network it would be subject to whatever controls, etc... are on that network. if the signal is interfering that much with yours, then the printer could be on it as well. (then the wired PC wouldn't be able to print. i wasn't sure which one was able to)

one way to verify is to plug the wireless computer into the wired network and see if the problem persists.

And I appreciate it, some things I assume may very well not be correct.

Bank of America and Fidelity are a couple I remember that worked. There was one or two more but I can't remember what they were.

Here is one more weird item I forgot. Jr uses myspace, and it has the same thing happen on the 2nd computer, it acts like it is blocked with the same message. Every time.

Is there any way that the router software/firmware that controls blocking could be messed up?

I'm thinking the spyware could be it.

If both PCs are on your wireless network can you actually "see" both machines listed under your "entire network" or "group"?

Are they listed as having legit IPs when you log into your router?

Howzit

I did see both machines when I logged in to the router, yes. But I'm not sure if what I was looking at was actual connections or just a list of machines that had been set up.

You aren't taking "logging into the router" literally, are you? That could be your problem, you need to clean out your router.

Is there a firmware upgrade available for the router?

As far as resetting it . . . does it have a reset button on the back of it? If so you can reset it to factory defaults and redo your network setup. I'd only do that as a last resort.

I know you are all on the edge of your seats, so I am letting you know that I have resolved the issue.

When Verizon was installed in 2006, I played with setting up a rule to block some websites (myspace and AIM in particular) from 11:00 pm to morning. Never could get it to work right. It's been in place all this time and never has any website been blocked.

All of a sudden yesterday almost everything was blocked.

I have been on the phone waiting for Rajish for about an hour, and for chuckles decided to log on to the router and look around. I found that old rule, deleted it, and shazam.

My suspicion is that Verizon updated router software or firmware remotely, but I don't really care.
