My wife and I are considering a 9 hour drive to the Texas Coast.

What are the best areas to go to?
What are the cheapest but still good lodgings? (We're thinking around Galveston, but we're open to anywhere around that area.)

Any other tips for a traveler?

A Big Thanks in Advance!

I'll buy the Mountain Dew, Dr. Pepper and Peanuts, and we can all carpool. :D

The beach at Galveston is pretty icky. We go every couple of years and it is about an 8 hour drive from Edmond. I would advise you to kick in the few extra dollars and stay someplace nice.

The San Luis is pretty nice. We stayed there last trip. http://www.sanluisresort.com/

Moody Gardens is also very nice, though not on the beach. There is a lot to do there though. http://www.moodygardenshotel.com/

The rooms are small here but also very nice: http://www.galveston.com/hotelgalvez/

Reminds me of a joke I heard when living in Salt Lake City--

What's the difference between a good Mormon and a bad Mormon?

The temperature of their caffeinated beverages.

About Galveston, I got nothin'.

;)

In Utah, they sell their Dr. Pepper only in Brown Paper Sacks. :D

Kehma is nice, but that's all I know about the Galveston area.

Rockport (another 3 hrs south) is where most of the snowbird (winter Texans) go.

You can also get some good deals on cruises in the off season. A lot of the hotels will let you park in their lots while you go and drive you to the dock. That is pretty cool.

We take the kids to Port Aransas for Spring Break every year. It's about ten hours by car if you don't screw around and stop to pee every 30 seconds.

I like it because it's a very laid back place. The people are nice, there are lots of things to do, deep sea fishing, horseback riding, ane dolphin watching excursions are some of my favorites. You are close to Corpus Christi, where you can go visit the Texas State Aquarium or the U.S.S. Lexington (an aircraft carrier turrned into a museum.) Lots of good places to eat too, especially if you like seafood.

I've heard people say they've seen tar on the beach, but I've only seen that on Corpus Christi beach, never in Port Aransas. The water is not the prettiest, but I'm told that is the case all along the Texas Gulf Coast because of it's proximity to the mouth of the Mississppi.

Also, make sure you go to Port Aransas, on Mustang Island, and not Aransas Pass, on the mainland. Aransas Pass is bleh.

My dad is one of the worst when it comes to stopping to pee. I don't think I'll ever road trip with him again because he makes a 3 hour trip take one day.

Anyone who has ever played the "Czar's Bathroom Trip Drinking Game" knows why that's funny, SLC.

Your first concern is to stop in Waco on the way and have a good old time with Uncle SicEm. ;)

I second the Port Aransas recommendation.

It's not that it flew over our heads. It's that it's still at the airport and it hasn't arrived yet. :D
