View Full Version : Stadium Moniker...

CORNholio

Why doesn't OU have a moniker for "Gaylord Memorial Stadium"? Florida has the Swamp, LSU has Death Valley, Michigan-the Big House....etc.
If OU had a moniker for their stadium what should it be? Or is it stupid to call a stadium something other than the official name? Thoughts....

I prefer Owen Field to Gaylord Memorial but names like the Swamp and Death Valley sound pretty intimidating to opposing teams.

I seriously wish the "Gaylord Family" name was taken out. Who gives a damn if they have money...hell, they already have a resort and hotels and is the sponsor of the Music City Bowl. The jOklahoman is evident enough that the Gaylord name is worthless....despite the money they have.

Oklahoma Memorial Stadium was the better name and should still be the name. You don't see people or corporations having their names in front of Ohio Stadium or Michigan Stadium.

I know this thread is based on the nickname aspect and I could care less if we have one although it wouldn't hurt if we did have one just for the fun of it. I know this sounds very corny and perhaps original, but how about SWITZERland. Other ideas...Stoops Coupe, The Church (The Cathedral was mentioned by someone else and both would be nice).

Memorial Stadium, Norman, Oklahoma

For eighty-three years, Oklahoma Sooners football has been played at the site of Memorial Stadium. The first Sooners football game was played while the stadium plans were being developed, with OU defeating Washington College of Missouri, 62-7. The field which the games are contested upon, Owen Field, is named after the first head coach of the program, Bennie Owen. Originally set with grass turf, the grass was replaced with tartan artificial turf in 1970, and with super turf in 1981. Thankfully, grass was laid again to be play upon in 1991. The official listed capacity for Memorial Stadium is 81,207, with the largest assembled number of fans for a game being 84,027 for the 2003 game against Oklahoma State University.
The program's overall record for games on Owen field is 314-79-14, a winning percentage of .789

I remember "The Snake Pit" was what we called it when I was in school (72-75). It never occurred to me that it might have something to do with being at the intersection of Lindsay & Asp but having read it here, I like it. The reason OUr stadium nickname hasn't caught on may have something to do with not being allowed to bring signs into the games (a rule I have never liked) so people watching televised games have no opportunity to read things like "Huskers get bit in the Snake Pit" or seeing it worked into the letters E-S-P-N. It would be cool though.
