I need a pair of running shoes. I am going to run my first 5k in April and my rocket dogs while comfortable aren't going to cut it for the long term. So my question is this. While I know aisics are like the end all be all of running shoes. I really like new balance. And I wanted to know if it would be terrible for me to get mens shoes. The girls shoes are butt *** ugly and are twice the cost.

So what say you wise old South Oval.

*snort*

Of all the questions I envisioned when I clicked on this thread, "Is it ok to wear men's shoes" didn't even make the list.

I used to wear Asics but somewhere along the line started wearing Brooks Beast. I won't wear anything else now. Tried NB, but just didn't care for how they felt on my feet. Don't remember how they looked.

Go ahead and get men's shoes. Incorporate enough vertical in your stride and nobody will even notice the shoes.

:)

Oh, and goodonya for your 1st 5k.

wear what you feel comfortable in. I've put a lot of miles in both asics and new balance.

For what it's worth I didn't like Nike, I got a pair of nike shocks and no matter how much I broke them in, or ran in them they just never were right for me.

If you go to these specialty running stores they will watch you run and actually get you the best shoe for your feet, not the most expensive like at a mall. There used to be one in Norman over by Steve Owens Building, and Louies, and ladies clothing store called Chico's.

I have worn NB for the past 10 years or so and really liked them. Before that I always wore Nike, but they never fit my feet (13 kinda wide).

About 3 months ago Runner's World in Norman (the place USMC is talking about) had a big sidewalk sale. I tried on a pair of Saucony Phoenix running shoes. I've been running in them since, and they are even more comfy than the NBs. I think I paid about $30 for them on sale (regular price was maybe $89 or so).

I highly recommend them.

I may try to swing over there this week. It's a huge deal for me to start running again. I used to run a couple miles every day in HS and absolutely hated it (I'm short with short legs I don't cover much ground). But decided I needed to do something as a stress reliever so it was either running or drinking.

Is it the OKC Marathon? My brothers and I are doing the half-marathon then. It's my first.

I'll probably wear men's shoes, too.

go to Oklahoma Runner in Brookhaven. They'll look at your feet and the way you walk and tell you what kind of shoes you need. Shoes are the most important thing if you're going to be running, and they can hook you up with the best shoe for your particular mechanics.

Other than that, just try them on and walk around in them. I am an overpronator so I wear Brooks Beast, and they feel like Frankenstein boots, but they are worth the extra weight because they support better than any other shoe I've tried. Asics felt light to me, but didn't provide the motion control that I needed, Sauconys toe box is too narrow for my foot and pinched my toes. Same thing with New Balance.

Don't go for looks. Just spray paint them silver if you need to.

I'd guess wearing men's shoes would be fine but I'm not expert on that. (I mean, I'm no expert on being a woman wearing men's shoes... ;-)

I would suggest going to a good running store where they have runners who are trained to fit you. They'll have you walk without shoes, look at the wear pattern on you old shoes (if you've run some in the past), and will bring out quite a few pairs of shoes that fit your walking/running style. It's important that they identify if you over pronate or suponate, etc. Many shoes are designed for the different type of strides.

That's worked out pretty well with me. I used to use Asics and I like them but the last couple of times I've bought Brooks and they've been great.

My biggest issue is that they want you to walk in the shoes and sometimes run a block or so. While that's good and you can definitely exclude bad fits, I just don't feel like I can test a shoe until I've run 5 or so miles in it. But, of course, they're not going to let you do that.

Be careful. Take it easy. Make sure you pay attention to your intended route. I'm not a doc, but I know ladies are far more prone to blow out knees running outdoors than men are.

It has something to do with the fact y'alls hips are wider, and because people tend to put one foot in front of the other while running, the result is a lot of stress and sideloads on gal's knees. Too often, running gals' knees are what gives. Especially if they've had children because that tends to widen that pelvis even more than the way you're born.

Okay, let the snarky comments and hilarity ensue...but I'm not talking out my butt here. I actually read this somewhere in some journal.

The only asics shoes I have ever worn are the old school cheerleading shoes. If the running shoes are like their cheerleading shoes I'm going to have to pass. While they are comfortable as heck to wear they were the suck to tumble or stunt in.

I'm running indoors right now at the Y. I have already blown out both my knees. I tore my left acl and mcl my junior year in a basketball game and then in 06 I had surgery on my right knee to remove a tumor/cyst right in the damn middle of my joint. It was the suck, but I seem to be doing alright not wearing my knee brace.

I'm taking it really, really slow. I walk just about every day at least 2 if not three miles, but today I ran a half of mile with out dying which was nice.

I'm a lazy wuss I know.

I found this. The innerweb is a wonderful thing. based on your history, perhaps a bike might be the ticket. Something to think about anyway.

Anatomy of the problem

Why are women's knees, in a sense, their Achilles heel?

"For one thing, a woman's wider pelvis causes her thigh bone to descend at an inward angle to the knee. That increases the load on the knee," explains Michael G. Ciccotti, M.D., a Philadelphia sports medicine specialist.

When a woman becomes fatigued, as during an athletic event, the angle on landing becomes more pronounced, further increasing the chance of injury.

Another difference also involves the thighbone, says Edward M. Wojtys, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon in Ann Arbor, Mich.

A band of fibrous connective tissue called the anterior cruciate ligament passes through a "notch" in the lower end of the thighbone that forms part of the knee. The ligament, one of several that attach the upper and lower leg bones, is about the same size for a woman as a man—but the notch is up to 20 percent narrower in women. That makes the woman's ligament more susceptible to tearing.

A woman's hamstring muscles, at the back of the thigh, are weak compared with her quadriceps, the muscles at the front of the thigh. The quadriceps pull the bones of the lower leg forward, and the hamstrings pull them back. Hamstring muscles help protect the ACL from injury. When the pulling power is out of balance to the rear, the knees suffer.

The muscle imbalance is far worse in women than in men. Dr. Wojtys blames the imbalance on patterns that develop in childhood if girls engage in less physical play. Exercise can help overcome the problem.

Risk of injury to the ACL appears to be higher during ovulation, when estrogen levels are highest. The ACL appears to respond to estrogen by decreasing cell activity to repair basic ligament fibers called collagen.

straight line running does not bring the female hip issue into question...it is that simple...

But it does. When you realize that when running your feet land at the centrerline of your body to maintain balance, not directly under your hips. The angle is in play on every stride. And the angles on a woman's body are larger than the angles created by a male body.

I'm going to side with the evidence from the orthopedic surgeon on this one.

From a running site:

"Physical differences between the sexes are extensive: Women have a wider pelvis than men and comparatively shorter upper legs. The result when running is that women's' hips and thighs tend to turn inwards and their legs take on an ‘X’ shape. This causes disproportional strains and impact on the hip, knee joints and lower back. In contrast to men, women's' knees tend to work too much as shock absorbers.

Furthermore, the female hormone, estrogen, which varies during the monthly cycle, affects the laxity of female athletes' ligaments. This causes the arch of the foot to become flatter and less supportive during ovulation."

Seems like nobody gets it the way rus gets it.

You know, you are really starting to p me off. Listen bub, I was in a profesion for about 26 years that required its members to run several times a week. I also happened to have had two seperate assignments, with the land forces, which required me and my subordinates to run, every day.

Now, it wasn't sprinting like you appear to allege your gazelle-like arse does, but it was putting one foot in front of the other in rapid succession for 4-6 miles, often in formation, often in combat boots.

Now, that said, females had more frequent knee trouble than males. I even had to redeploy a female airman (a weather observer) from Asscrackistan to home because her knee was so bad, originally injured just "slogging" as you call it, and exacerbated by walking around on uneven ground in the AO.

I'm not a doctor, but I can read. I further believe, you sir, are dead wrong based on a combination of my personal experience and a review of the literature on the subject.

why is everyone arguing with an idiot?
he's like my ex husband. will argue with anyone about anything just for the sake of arguing.

He called me one day to b*tch about something:
me: "i don't have time for this...all you do is argue with me"
him: "no I don't"

HOMEY BEAT DOWN!!!

And as a professional who spends most of her days in the offices of these fine doctors. It doesn't matter whether you are sprinting straight or playing ball girls tend to tear their acl's more. Its the way our bodies are built the angle of our hips and anyone who argues with me is a friggin moron.

I have been running in New Balance 990 series shoe for about 14 years. I am a big guy (6'5" 240) and like the cushion these shoes provide. These shoes will take lots of miles, before they break down.

Just two little questions and my suggestion.

Why is Soonerus still here? Why in the world does he have ANY green spek?

Oh and I spoke to my boss (who is female and runs local marathons lots) and she suggested these (http://www.worldathleticshoes.com/axiom.html).

Hope this helps give you another choice.

Because many on SF would not be able to go on w/ out him...

On a side not: I bet I can run a 5k faster than anyone else here...

As a side note, being that Rus is unaware of physiological differences between men and women, I'm surprised that Catfish exists.

However, that being said, I've seen Catfish. I have no doubt that he could run a 5k pretty fast.

We should have an SF 5k , I'd beat most of your arses but not Catfish who was a State Champion at this distance...

Mike, you don't understand...straight line running/jogging/slogging is different than basketball or a high "cuting" sport where the womens body shape actually makes a difference..naive not to recognize this...

Geez. No one shoe is going to be great for everyone.

Nikes are fine for running.

I've run in Asics, Avia, Mizuno, Saucony, etc. I'm currently using Air Structure Triax. Different shoes are great to try, you'll eventually find some that you'll love, then the company will change the design.

The arch of your foot and the wear pattern on the bottom of your shoes are great telling signs for any control issues you might have.

Also, track the mileage and get new pair of shoes every 400 miles.

Try the Runner in OKC. It's owned by Brent Gaddis. It's been in business longer than any of the running stores around here.

That's what the folks at OK Runner did. They have you walk around the store and see whether or not you pronate or over-pronate, how your legs are aligned, arches etc...and then recommend a shoe.

I've been to the Runner...years ago...and they're good about that too.
