Yes, we've all heard of the Toledo Mudcats.

Perhaps even the Montgomery (AL) Biscuits. Or, the Akron Lugnuts.

Add to that list, the announcement of the Wichita Wingnuts.

that is all.

I think it's the Toledo Mud Hens.
I miss the 89ers.
New Olreans has the Zephyrs, but they brought the name from Denver.

I wonder, is the mascot actually named after the gun?

While they aren't a minor league team, the "Liberal Bee Jays" in Liberal, KS, a long standing semi-pro team has always been my favorite.

They're named for this bird.

Wilmington Blue Rocks

The Swedes disembarked from their ship, the Kalmar Nyckel, onto bluish colored rocks in 1638. They had the same real estate guy who bought Manhattan for $24. Peter Minuit bought present-day Wilmington, Delaware, for a copper pot and some trinkets.

http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w129/preservationparcels/KalmarNyckel.jpg

The Swedes built a fort and named both it and the river for their queen who had taken the throne at the age of six - Christina. They traded for beaver furs with the Lenni-Lenape, and sent home bales of them along with lumber and tobacco.

http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w129/preservationparcels/JohanPrintz.jpg

Their governor, Johann Printz, was reputed to be nearly 7 feet tall and 400 pounds. He ruled until the Swedes stopped sending supplies for six years. His predecessor fell for a trap set by Pegleg Peter Stuyvesant. Pete didn't want to attack the Swedes because that would look ugly, so he built a fort just downriver and left it guarded by 9 guys with no black powder.

http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w129/preservationparcels/stuyvesant1.jpg

The new governor took over the fort in a bloodless coup, and the next year old Pete came back with 7 ships full of 317 soldiers. Because the Swedes had stolen his fort, Peter was justified in taking back not only his fort, but also the Swedish one in Wilmington. He told the Swedes they could stay if they would turn Dutch, and he ruled from New Amsterdam (New York) until the Duke of York came and changed the flags once again.

Actually Mike, they folded their tent five years ago. The local beer distributor who owned the team initially still owns the rights to the name. The only thing keeping them from coming back is a mayor and city council who want to charge them an exhorbitant rent with no cut from concessions or indoor advertising.

Sand Gnats
No-see-ums
Flying Teeth

No matter what you call 'em, they are the majorly succ. Try to play softball on a Charleston summer evening and they are in your mouth, eyes, nose, ears...biting.

South Carolina - beautiful, beautiful place BUT, you can be getting ravaged on a fire-ant pile getting bit by sand gnats and the mosquitoes will rescue you by carrying you off to the alligator swamp to separate you from your blood.
