Just bought a new Dell that has Vista on it....my question is, can I install my old hard drive from a Compaq that has XP on it as an additional drive? I'm not interested in the XP as much as all of the files and doc's on the old one.

TIA

Yes. Make sure the old drive is set as a slave instead of a master and you should be golden. If you don't understand what that means, it's going to take a little more explanation....

I understand the difference between the master and the slave:hot:. Once I install it and boot back up, is the computer going to just recognize it and prompt me for the information?

thanks

Yes. If you set the old drive as a slave it should ignore the OS and see it as a regular drive. Then you can copy all your porn to the new drive or just leave the old drive in.

Why go through the hassle.

Just copy all the files you want to keep to a $15 thumb drive and move them over that way.

Ahhhh... you forgot to mention that.;) ;)

In that case, do the master/slave thing as mentioned.

But don't forget the jumpers on the back of the HD.

Set the old HD to "Slave".

slave/master won't make a difference, especially since he probably has SATA drives and well, you don't chain on them.

Set your boot order in the bios

True. But we don't know how old his fried PC is.

Ok, now I'm getting skeptical about being able to do this. The new pc drive is SATA. The old pc drive is IDE. If I get an IDE to SATA adapter like this (http://www.whatacable.com/serialatasatatoideconverter.aspx) one, do I still have to make sure the jumper is set to slave? If not, how do I set it up in BIOS? Or, should I just **** off and quit bugging you guy's with dumbass questions?:D

That should work

You still need to into the bios and make the old drive secondary, or HDD 02 (if the first one is 01) or HDD 01 (if the first one is 00).

I would still set the jumper in the back to slave though.

You'll have to watch the startup of the new PC to see how to get into setup. Usually it is just holding down the del or esc key during boot-up. Or, F1 or something.

Once you're in the bios, it's pretty easy to see where you need to go.

how is another possible solution

get one of the 'HD drive enclosures'. i have used these in the past and they work great. simply install the old HD into the enclosure and plug the USB cable into your laptop. Vista should be able to recognize the new hardware. not jumper settings need to be changed.

seconded.

These enclosures are not very expensive either.

I second the "buy a cheap external enclosure and hook the drive up through USB" solution. It avoids the IDE-to-SATA complexity, it avoids the master/slave issue, and it avoids the "possibly dueling OSes" issue.

Move your data from the old drive to your new drive, re-format the old drive, and use it as external data storage or backup.

Or just by a IDE to USB (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232002) converter and power adapter . . . another link (http://www.emtcompany.com/catagories/usb-to-ide-adapters.htm?gclid=CJGA_KnQ5JACFQdjsgod1lUPYQ)

SATA does not regonize that a drives set in slave, it's one drive per line. setting it in slave makes no ****ing difference if you're not chaining multiple drives. just set it master or cable select.

oh, and yeah, enclosures is a great idea. Make sure it's for IDE is all, set the drive to CS or master and and then plug it into the usb

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010090092+1053807123+1054107130&name=IDE

you can even get some with ide and sata interfaces inside, that way you can swap out the drive at a later date. I use build my own for my laptop. That way I can carry "high" capacity 2.5" drives

I recently did the same thing with my PC. New drive, SATA. Old drive, IDE.

I just plugged the IDE drive into the 40 pin ribbon cable. Had to mess around with the jumpers on the IDE drive a couple times during boot up, but it worked fine. Can't remember where the jumper ended up being set.
