Wonderful job so far!

I was finally able to quit in August of '06 after smoking on and off for 18 years.

It takes about 72 hours for a person to get over the withdrawl symptoms of nicotine addiction, so now its a matter of the psychological aspect of it.

Prayers going your way, cause I'm convinced that is the only way I was able to manage last year. :)

I was only able to quit by HAVING ACTUAL FEAR OF TOBACCO. It can kill you so many different ways. Even then, it was extremely hard. The first 3 days are far and away the most difficult. But, I think to get to the point where you think very little or not at all about smoking, you must MAINTAIN THAT FEAR. Think about the inevitability of emphasyma or pulmonary fibrosis, lung cancer and/or other cancers, or heart trouble.

Agreed with everyone else here about the health issues. I used to get pneumonia at least once per year and while I have had a couple of colds in the 17 months since I quit, I've not had a single upper respiratory infection since then.
Its also really nice to wake up in the morning and not have to spend the first 5-10 minutes coughing to clear my lungs.

Here is another little tidbit for incentive: After a person quits smoking for 5 years, their risk factors decrease to the same levels as a person who has never smoked.

Vet - good luck in whipping this addiction. It is very difficult to accomplish..... If I did it, so can you! (one of the tools I used was a jar of butts - if I got to a point to where I thought I really missed it, I opened the jar and took a whiff of those butts --- that cured my though of missing them!)

It is supprising how much better you will feel after a few weeks. It is that darn habit thing - like after eating, first thing in the morning, dumping, etc. Try to find something else to do to replace the typical cig activity - it helps!

I'm pulling for you! If you get down or have a weak period, let us help you through those times. We have been through it before, and you can count on support from all of us here...........

Congratulations. I hope the habit is behind you forever, but if you slip up don't give up. When you're tempted think about your children and grandchildren and all the things you'll miss if you die before your time. I guarantee you that if you don't smoke for a couple of months you'll feel noticeably better. You will probably also gain some weight.

I quit in June after 30+ years of unfiltered Pall Malls. I was as hardcore a smoker as you can be. I've gained about 15 pounds but I also got serious about exercise and look and feel better than I have in years.

There are still times when I would like to smoke and probably always will be but they pass quickly now. Mostly I'm glad every day that I was able to quit. Hang in there, you'll get there too.

First three days are when the withdrawals get you. Now its just mental. My dad smoked for 32 years, and quit in august. He had to use chantix, but he hasnt had one since then. If it gets really hard for you, i recommend getting a rx for some. It really does work. Just dont get any nicotine gum or anything like that. Since you are past the withdrawals, the gum will just make you feel like you did on day 1 and 2 again.

I think so. Nothing about your lungs has cleared yet, but no more irritating smoke is probably helping you breath easier.
Cravings get better, there will be little panic attacks from time to time when you really want a smoke (like the first time back in a casino ). They get less frequent with time.

Congrats on only thinking about it every 5 minutes. If you're like me, it will take you about a year to only think about it a few times a day.

People who have never been addicted to cigarettes just don't get how hard it is to readjust almost everything you do during the course of a day. Cigarettes aren't just an addiction.... they are a way of life. Now we just have to learn how to do Life without them.

That's so true! I quit smoking 8 years ago. I would still get cravings when I drove to certain places because I was so use to lighting up. For instance I knew I could smoke one cigarette in the time it took me to get from my mom's house to my best friend's house. Even today when I drive that route I want to light one up. The cravings get so much better over time, though. Now it's not really a craving but more like a force of habit if that makes sense.

This is exactly why I wish the drug manufacturers would come up with lower-dosed gum/lozenges, etc....

IMO, there needs to be yet one more step for those who quit smoking with these items, as the physical addiction is still very much there.

Keep up the good work vet!

About 3 months after I gave up my smokes I was cleaning out the junk drawer in the kitchen and found an old pack that had somehow wormed its way to the bottom of the detritus and was laying in the bottom of the drawer with 2 ciggies still left in it tempting me.

I grabbed the pack and stuck it in the sink full of dishwater reeeeeeally quick before they tempted me too much.

Give that thing lying on your CP desk a big ole' FY from me as well.
Im gonna leave it there , Just to Prove to Rus Im a bigger Man than it ! ;) :D  :pop:
