Can someone tell me what the sales tax is on new cars in Oklahoma? I have read that it is different from the "normal" sales tax. Also, is there a flat fee for the tag and license as well?

TIA

it'll cost you around $1,800 for a $30,000 vehicle. The next year it's $85.

OK, so is that just the tax on the new car or the whole enchilada? Right now it looks like I'll spend about $40k for the new ride.

the tag is the tax, the tax is the tag. You'll take roughly $2k down to the tag office with your paperwork in hand, give them the money and they will give you a tag. If you don't get it done within 30 days of purchase you will pay a $0.25/day penalty.

If you are on the rolls of a Native-American tribe, you can get a really cheap tag.

We just bought the tag for the $47,000 '03 Expedition (which she stole from me) & it was $589.

They aren't really a lot cheaper. Also, you not only have to be enrolled, you also have to live within that tribe's jurisdiction.

Thus, a person who lives in southern Oklahoma who is a Cherokee, cannot run a Cherokee tag.

For that matter, a Cherokee who lives in Tulsa, south of Admiral, cannot run a Cherokee tag. Likewise, a Tulsa Creek who lives north of Admiral (in the Cherokee nation) cannot run a MCN tag.

the percentage of the tax is higher on used vehicles than it is on new vehicles if I remember correctly.

Wow. Good luck. I couldn't imagine spending that much on vehicle. That's way too much of a monthly payment for me.

I've always wondered about this. How do my neighbors have two different tribal tags (I'm not sure of the tribes), yet live in Crown Heights in the middle of OKC? These people really need to save money, too, as they live in one one of the biggest houses in CH-EH.

Our three kids are outgrowing the midsize SUV and the larger SUV just seemed like a logical step. I hate paying that for a new ride but stuff ain't cheap these days and I'm tired of the lack of room and comfort as well.

What makes it really fun, is that we have a trade and owe some cash on it... I'm sure that'll make it a real fun negotiation.

I was in the same boat. I started looking at late model used Expeditions & ended up buying two last year; the 2003 & a 1998. Both were steals. I'd suggest going that route. Let somebody else pay for the depreciation for the new one.

"Unlike you, I could pay off my house and cars right now with a write of check!"

Not that it matters but there isn't really a sales tax on a vehicle, it's an excise tax I believe.

Excise tax in Oklahoma is 3.25%

Buying a car in Kansas where one pays full sales tax was a pain in the arse.
