View Full Version : Why aren't pharmacies opened on New Year's Day?

It doesn't make sense to me. You'd think they'd be open.

If anyone knows of a pharmacy that is actually opened would you please let me know. I need to ask them a question.

Or if any of you guys know anything about drug interactions, I'd appreciate the help.

Obviously, you need a better class of Wal-mart.

Shoot, I don't know. I guess pharmacists get days off now and then too. :D

I literally had someone yelling at me yesterday because the credit union wasn't going to be open today. Bonus: I wasn't working yesterday, I just happened to be at the branch and this dude unloaded on me.

I can understand that pharmacists need a day off, but it's a little frustrating when you can't get in touch with a pharmacy and you really need to.

The Wal-Mart pharmacies are independent and tend to have wholly different hours than the store. Did they answer the phone? I thought most Wal-Mart stores were closed on New Years Day.

ALL of the 24 hour Walgreens and CVS locations should be open, some of the ones not open 24 hours may or may not be open. I spent a bunch there today getting drugs to take care of my sinus infection, the Vicodin works wonders on the headache :D

I called several Walmarts, Walgreens and CVS pharmacies in the area. None were open.

One of the Walmart's I called I spoke with the "operator" she said that none of the Walmart pharmacies were opened that day. She suggested that I call the ER or Fire Department if I had an emergency. What I needed to know wasn't an emergency... but it was important.

I know the Walgreens and CVS at 39th & MacArthur (not too far from my parents house) and the Walgreens at 50th & May (down the street from my old house) are always open, I have been there on Christmas Day and they are open and have pharmacists 24 hours a day. I am not sure of others ones but I think there is at least one 24 hour store open in every area. I know the pharmacy in the CVS store by our house down here has had different hours than the store but it is not a 24 hour store.

I'm glad someone suggested a 24 hour walgreens. The pharmacies in those are also open 24 hours a day every single day of the year. I hope everything is ok, SG!

You can always call poison control if it's a drug related question. Pharmacists man the phones usually.

I'm really disappointed you didn't give the SO first shot at your question.

I kinda did... after calling 3 Walmarts, two Walgreens and the CVS down the street from me.

I figured someone from the SO would come through.

Everything is okay.... just wanted to make sure an over the counter med didn't interact with a prescription med. It doesn't, so now the medicine can be taken and all will be well.

And yes.... we do need days off every now and then.

I worked for Walgreens for over 10 years and I must say that the year since that I have not worked for them has been sheer bliss.

This is the first New Year's Day I have had off since 1996 :)

What is stupid is that the walgreens here were open thanksgiving, christmas, and new years day, but the pharmacy part of it was closed.

See! I'm not the only one that doesn't get it. Thanks SIA!

It all comes down to $$$

For what you pay a manager and a couple of cashiers, you pay the same amount to have a pharmacist stand back in the pharmacy on a really slow day and not even fill enough prescriptions to cover the payroll for the day.

If you have 5 walgreens in a town and 3 of them are 24-hour stores and they are all within about 10-15 minutes of each other, it is not fiscally responsible to keep all 5 pharmacy departments open on a holiday. Better to keep the 24-hour stores open and people can drive over to those.

Christmas and Thanksgiving are the only two days a non 24 hr Walgreens pharmacy is not open. On all other holidays the pharmacy is open at least 9-5. If there is not a 24 hr store near by a pharmacy will be open the same hours as the store.
