I'm glad they changed the name. It really heightens the drama of Air Force playing a bunch of Berkley hippies. :D

Air Force is making Cal look very bad. Or is Cal making Cal look very bad? I guess I better keep watching.

Make this the offical thread and give updates to us poor bastages chained to our desks.

I do get the weather channel in here so in exchange I can keep everyone posted on weather delays out of logan airport.

Air Force running over Cal at this point. Not a lot of point production, though. I think it's still 7-0 Flyboys. Cal had a couple chances in the red zone but couldn't connect.

AF QB breaks huge keeper run into Cal red zone. AF second and goal, now.

14-0 Air Force off a TD pass from Carney to the TE.

Great special teams play by AF, recovered the kickoff at the Cal 40 after it hit a Cal player in the head. lol

Ash

Cal muffs kick-off, AF recovers in Cal territory - then Carney almost breaks a run up the middle for six. shoestring tackle saves the score.

Cal looks like the mid-major and AF looks like the BCS league team at this point.

Did Cal show up at this game thinking they belonged in a BCS bowl game? It sure looks like they are "playing" the same way when Tech blew them out in the Holiday Bowl a few years ago.

Ash

I though Cal was supposed to be one of the fastest teams in the nation at the beginning of this season. AF is running at will on them.

Fast with no direction is bad against the option.

21-0 FlyBoys

21 - 0 AF

Ash

TD Air Force off the option pitch to the right. The AF back just outran the Cal defender to the corner. LOL. Team speed, PAC-10...

Cal sux.

I think Bell sponsored the Armed Forces Bowl, because the DOD is a primary client. This bowl helps that client, in that it gives another bowl option to the service academies. Because somewhere in the 90% range of all general officers come from the service academies, they would look favorably on Bell for future contracts (as opposed to Boeing-Sikorsky or Northrop-Grumman). Something like that. That's my theory, anyway. Totally unproven.

21-0 FlyBoys

Point being that Air Force is outrunning them to spots not running past overpursuit.

Either Cal is half assing it out there or they're slower than hyped.

I think Bell's helicopter division is also based in Fort Worth, if they aren't based there they still have a bunch of facilities there.

Cal TD

21-7 AF

21-7. Cal scores on 40 yd TD catch, after changing QBs.

There are way too many bowl games. 6-6 teams shouldn't be in bowls.

To be honest, I don't mind having all this college football to watch during the holidays, even though I only get to actually watch a fraction of the games.

The problem is the bowl tie ins and "power" conferences getting so many bowl bids even though not all the teams are bowl worthy. Now that there's 12 games, it should be a 7-5 or 8-4 cut off for bowl eligibility regardless of what conference you're a part of. Just my .02.

Cal is the biggest myth in college football. They beat USC in OT back on '03, almost beat them again for a couple of years after that...and that's it. Yet somehow, that was enough to declare them an elite school. Yeah, an elite school that gets their clocks cleaned in every podunk bowl game they go to. :D

bluedogok
12/31/2007, 01:34 PM
I like watching them, it's still football.

The tie-ins going as deep as they do is a big part of the problem.

Cal may be just waking up, after all it was a 9am start for them.

21-14 AF

The tie-ins going as deep as they do is a big part of the problem.

Reasons conference tie-ins with bowls suck:

1) Undeserving teams get picked ahead of more deserving ones just because they're in a certain conference. (i.e., 6-6 "power conference" teams getting to play in postseason when 8-4 mid-majors get left out)

2) One conference's third-place team blows out some other conference's seventh-place team, and the tired and annoying "conference power" drum gets beaten. Seriously, "conference power/superority" is the new Most Annoying Thing About College Football, replacing the old number one, "no system for crowning an actual national champion".

Another thing about bowl bids is that they're supposed to be a reward for teams that played a good season but how the team played down the stretch should also be considered. Last night's suck fest and this bowl feature teams that lost the majority of their games in the second half of the season (4 of the last 5, 5 of the last 6, etc.). How is that a good season or worth a bowl trip?

Uhhmmm... the game is named in honor of Mike "Helicopter" Bell. I thought everyone knew that.

AF may be more white than that vaunted 1970 whorn team!

I mean they are LILLY WHITE! They did come to play. IF Cal can convert on 3rds more, they should win by winging the ball all over the field.

There's the usual quote for a Cal bowl game, "they were almost no. 1 halfway through the season!"
heh

True, but I don't think "because it can't make things any worse" should be a valid excuse for going for two. :D

I wish that was Bob's thinking in the second half of the first Mizzou game this year.
