Bro. Oral had to learn the hard way like many other religious based health care entities that the hospital business is a money losing proposition. ORU closed both its medical and dental schools because not enough of their graduates were going on medical missions largely due to the massive debt they amassed during school.

A group of orthopedic surgeons opened the Orthopedic Hospital of Oklahoma (OHO) in 2001 as a for profit specialty hospital and it is doing quite well. Earlier this year the name was changed to Oklahoma Surgical Hospital as the specialties served expanded from only orthopedic surgery to general, plastics, and GYN surgery. I work in the anesthesia group that covers OSH and I am there often.

Founded in 2001 by physicians who shared an important vision of healthcare for their patients, the Orthopedic Hospital of Oklahoma set out to:

Create a hospital dedicated exclusively to orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation care
Implement the latest technologies throughout the hospital
Assemble an outstanding medical staff
Recruit sensitive healthcare professionals and support staff
Plan conveniences that positively effect every patient’s hospital experience
Produce an atmosphere of genuine quality, caring, and respect
We believe we have been hugely successful on all those fronts.

The Orthopedic Hospital of Oklahoma is located in south Tulsa inside the CityPlex Towers.

The hospital facility includes 10 surgical suites for inpatient and outpatient surgeries, 25 beautiful hospital rooms, a Therapy Center, the Imaging Center and a full complement of other hospital services, all with just one focus: orthopedics.

The outstanding medical staff at the Orthopedic Hospital of Oklahoma includes orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, and anesthesiologists. Many of these doctors are from the largest specialty practices in the region. All physicians who practice at the hospital are members of independent practices and are not employees of the Orthopedic Hospital of Oklahoma. The surgical services they provide at the Orthopedic Hospital of Oklahoma include:

Reconstructive Surgery
Arthroscopic Surgery
Total Joint Arthroplasty
Treatment of Spinal Disorders
Sports Medicine
Repair of Complex Fractures
Treatment of Hand Injuries
Microsurgery
and Other Orthopedic Procedures

The doctors work in surgical suites with special features that optimize the environment where the surgery is performed and enhance orthopedic care. Similarly, the preoperative and postoperative areas include technologies that help our nurses meet each patient’s needs. Nursing plays an enormous role in every patient’s hospital experience. Every nurse, and every member of the hospital team, functions in a culture that is sensitive, respectful and innovative.

We place a very high priority on exceeding our guests’ expectations -- not just meeting their needs. Exceptional professional nursing care, centered on the individual needs of each patient, is the absolute standard at the Orthopedic Hospital of Oklahoma.

Diagnostic imaging plays a vital role in determining the appropriate treatment for orthopedic conditions and injuries. The Imaging Center at the Orthopedic Hospital of Oklahoma provides a complete array of imaging technology, including magnetic resonance image, computed tomography, and myelography. Click here to learn more about the Imaging Center.

At the Orthopedic Hospital of Oklahoma, the team of healthcare professionals in the Therapy Center helps each patient regain the maximum level of function and mobility that is possible for that person. Members of the Therapy Center team include specialists in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and medical rehabilitation. The center features a unique SwimEx pool, private treatment areas, exercise areas, heat treatment devices, and other specialized equipment. Click here to learn more about the Therapy Center.

Guest Services Representatives provide patients and their families with special services, information, and arrangements of every kind. Our philosophy is simple. We try to meet your every need and request while you are our guest.

Throughout the hospital interpersonal communication is excellent. Members of the medical staff know the importance of the doctor-patient relationship, and value it highly. Members of the professional and support staffs are proud to deliver care and service in ways that every guest can appreciate. All of the members of our team are genuinely proud of the wonderful new hospital they have created, and welcome the opportunity to care for our patients and their families.

A Sooner Buddy of mine had carpel surgery there the other morning.

We picked him up as he wasn't supposed to drive after the procedure.

The Coffee and donuts in the waiting room were very good. :D

The City of Faith was the first building Oral constructed with borrowed funds. Some of the Oral Roberts Association higher-ups argued against building the CoF, but lost the argument. Unfortunately, Oral should have listened to his executive committee.

So how does one build/create a university all his own? Did his family come from money? Yes I could go to the oru web site but what a yawn that would be.

The money came from donors - prayer cloths, seed money, etc.... Originally, they didn't construct any building, until they had the money in the bank. The Oral Roberts Association, prior to the university, was located in downtown Tulsa.

I work with a very religious guy who is currently attending ORU.

I asked him what lead him to the university. He had a surprising response: He wanted to know what it was about the place that made his brother lose his faith and go atheist.

If you need some of those "prayer cloths," let me know. I think I may be able to get my hands on a few....
