OK, after watching Gladiator a couple of times in the past couple of weeks I find myself wanting a Roman sword. Yeah crazy maybe, but I still want one.
Specifics:
* I want it to be authentic in size, shape, weight, etc.
* I want it to be a functional sword, and by that I mean I want it to be
made of real metal, sharp, pointy, the things a sword are supposed to
be, one that you actually could take into battle. This being said it
would end up simply being hung on the wall, but I don't want to hang
a poorly made piece of cheap crap on the wall.

I am familiar with the internet and Google, so yes I have looked there and found some sites of interest. I was just wondering with this board being populated with people of various talents and interests if someone wouldn't have more info they might be willing to share. Thanks

Also, http://www.armor.com/index.html is good for that sort of thing, but I don't see any Roman versions there.

Both those sites should carry swords made of carbon steel, NOT stainless steel. Stainless is bad - it shatters if you clank it against something hard.

Don't buy stainless steel "swords".

the roman legionnaire sword was made for close-in combat. somewhat the opposite of the phalanx/long spear action that Alexander conquered the world with.

Actually that's pretty good if you're looking for costume items. Which have the advantage of being much safer for the childrens.

that's the right shape, all i'm saying. but i'm all about the childrens.

i'm sure some creative anachronism types have an authentic sword you can get. i knew a dude (Classics PhD student) who did a pay thing to row a real size trireme across the Adriatic. pay to be a slave nostalgia.

These are battle ready swords, cutlasses, knives daggers etc. Sharpening extra. Carbon steel. Awesome. Must hide this site from my son, who is a sword fanatic. Hope you can find something in here, it goes on and on.

That all depends on the grade of the steel being used. There are "trash" grades of carbon steel. The more of certain elements in it, the more easily it brakes. Request the MTR from the steel used and I'll process it for you. :pop:

Maybe the thinking is, the sight of your sword shattering will leave your enemy so stunned that he'd be an easy target for a classic roundhouse kick or any variety of Jimmy Snuka moves.
