I doubt Musharraf wants democracy in Pakistan. 1) He's either deathly afraid of the terrorists or 2) they have him in his pocket and he is just candy mouthing the US so the administration won't hit his country in some form or another.
No matter what your ideologies are, the state of affairs in that part of the world is clearly very dangerous and is quite possibly on the brink of total anniahlation.

I don't think there's much we can do about it, except wonder... what the hell would motivate someone to get up in the morning, strap on a bomb and say "today, I'm gonna try and kill Benazir Bhutto so we can make Pakistan a happy place." Was she seen by some as a tool of the West or an usurper of some sort? I think Muslim radicals were opposed to Bhutto because she is a woman. They don't like Musharraf either. They want a theocracy run by a spiritual leader.

That, and the fact that steel expands as much as 18 inches per 100 feet when exposed to 1000 degrees fahrenheit. In other words, the steel didn't melt, the steel expanded easily as long or longer than this given the temperatures within which on top of vertical forces applied by the structure itself, applied vertical and horizontal forces from the steel members themselves distorting the load placement and forcing members to fail at attachment points and load bearing points.
It's the cardinal rule of the fire service with metal structures. Lightweight web truss, monolithic flying beam, panelized, you name it. If it's an unprotected steel frame structure or a steel frame structure with protection that's been compromised, the clock's tickin'. You got 5-10 minutes to make a stop once there's direct flame impingement on the structure.
Five minutes. And you're on the clock NOT when you get the alarm, but when it pops.
It ain't that damn complicated, especially if a dumb ol' fireman can understand it. I think whackjob hit the nail on the head.
EDIT: Just a head's up. That's 5-10 minutes, NOT until the steel is compromised by some NIOSH, NIST, or building code standard. That's 5-10 minutes until failure. Which to define, structural failure in the fire business equals collapse. Which if you're inside upon structural failure, that equals dead firemen.

This was inevitable, unfortunately. Pakistan is full of multiple parties that wanted her dead. Brave woman if you ask me, coming back to a country full of so many really violent people that wanted her dead. But also very stupid for thinking she could effect change in a dictatorship that harbors terrorists (not really because it wants to, but because it has to). Complicated country, that Pakistan. Complicated and violent. This was tragic and almost a guaranteed event. Unfortunately.
