I'm not one to ask like this, but my MIL has taken a turn for the worse. Some of you may be aware, she has COPD and has been hospitalized on and off over the last 5 years. Well, she has been in Deaconness since Nov. 1 and has taken a turn for the worse. My wife went up to OKC a couple of weeks ago and I returned from overseas travel only to get the Flu and pneumonia. So I am home-bound alone and my wife is trying to manage hospital care by herself as well as look after an elderly father in OKC.

Needless to say Christmas won't be too cheery for the THA household.

Please pray for my MIL to get better and gain strength. We hope to move her to a rehab hospital, but that requires her to get much better.

Thanks.

Thanks to everyone. I truly believe in the power of prayer and positive thoughts and they are much appreciated.

My MIL had a tough go of it through last night, however, the current crisis seems to have passed and she is now resting comfortably. She is not out of the woods and certainly will not be leaving the hospital any time soon. She was up to 120 mg of steroids/day for over 2 weeks in order to keep her breathing. Steroids are hell, she lost all muscle mass, became physically weak from them and bed ridden - most of the current problems stem from steriod use/step down. Mrs. THA went home about 9 pm last night to rest. I only hope I get to see her before I start traveling again. If it weren't for this darn pneumonia and flu, I probably would have gone up to see her.

I tell you, pneumonia is hell. I went out yesterday to run a few errands, and I was exhausted afterwards. It sure leaves you weak with a long recovery.

[PSA on] Please, please - if you smoke, please stop for your health. Not to judge, but all of my MIL health issues stem from 40 years of smoking. She was addicted so bad that even after she went on oxygen, she continued to smoke (hiding it from the family, but not really) for two more years. I can't imagine what it is like for her, but for the last 4 years, she has been in the hospital at least 1/4 to 1/2 of the time. Everytime she goes in - its at least a month... So please for your health, stop smoking I realize that not everyone gets like this, but do you want to chance it?[PSA off]

In.

Just got in from a Christmas trip to the in-laws' family down in Houston so this is the first I've read of this.

MIL Update: 1/21/2008

Well, Mrs. THA went back up to OKC last week. Good news is that they moved THA MIL to a re-hab hospital to get therapy to regain leg strength. She can currently only stand for a minute at a time. Hopefully she will continue to gain strength and be able to go home. This makes the 13th week she has been in hospital.

Not to be calloused, but I'd hate to see that bill, no wait - we ALL are (or at least she is getting her cut of the Oklahoma Tobaco Company windfall).

Thanks to all for your thoughts and prayers.

Thanks all.

Man if I could tell you some stories Mrs. THA went through...Whooo. I would never begrudge a nurse her pay ever again.

Her mom has no clue how sick she really was, she just as several weeks of no memory, which might be a good thing.
