We're heading up to the land of Mountains and Mormons Thursday PM. Driving straight through.
--We're debating on whether or not to take the Albuquerque-Gallup-Cortez route, the Salina-Denver-Cheyenne-Evanston route, or the Salina-Denver-Grand Junction route.

Any weather experts out there?

I'm leaning towards the southern route.

Hubler, when the wife and I moved from OKC to SLC in 2003 (in the summer), we took the Salina-Denver-Cheyenne-Evanston route because I was driving a big azz moving truck towing my truck.

We would have taken the Salina-Denver-GJ route, which I think would be fastest.

Seems like the southern route would take longer unless weather bad up north.

Lucky for you I work in a weather office! ;)

Well the southern route will take a few hours longer... But Colorado is not looking too good as of now... you will avoid some crappy weather heading south... either route you take Utah is gonna have a snow rain/snow mix... So its up to you.. Hope this helps!

Thanks to the both of you. Weather was my major concern. I've driven through the vail pass in the middle of a storm. SCARY stuff!

Of course, a REAL Mormon would take the Schooner thru Emigration Canyon and pop out on Sunnyside & Foothill

;)

Aye, we've taken that route too many times to count. Wyoming is my favorite route because of speed, but I've also seen white outs in Wyoming that close miles of free way.

I would base it on the weather

The original route to the land of milk and honey is a little risky this time of year. I'd go the southern route.....have a great trip.

no, a REAL Mormon would winter-over among us Gentiles before heading west in the spring. ;)

It'd be a much more scenic route the salina way....

p.s. If you go that way, please stop at the exxon at the hay's exit and tell the cashier I'd like his home phone number so I could cuss him out again for not selling me that 12 pack at 12:01 a.m. TIA.

actually Hubler, I meant a real schooner. Like a horse-drawn one. Like the REAL Mormons. Up Emigration in the snow in the tracks of the Donner Party.

:D I suppose I could get a hand cart or Covered Wagon, but I'm not sure how fuel efficient they are.

On 3 occasions I made the mistake of having to spend the night in Gallop. I tried 3 hotels. I wont make that mistake again.

Please. I live in town -- not out in the boonies of one of the dirt miles.

I have to say though...I don't know if you've been out to 3 mile lately but in a few years it'll be virtually indistinguishable from the rest of town. They've built that area up so much.

Got back from Utah about 6 pm. My goodness the weather was awful for the travel, but it was worth it to see family and friends.

We drove through 3 Snow Storms in Utah and 1 in New Mexico. Wow! It's unreal how many idiots feel the need to speed on iced over roads. We saw about 6 different accidents. We're never taking another December road trip longer than 2 hours.

Mixer!
