I used a can of bud light, water, some sliced ham, garlic, cayenne, black papper, salt and some Lawry's. I had to go with what was on hand.
I hope they turn out alright. The store in gerty didn't have any jalapenos nor salt pork. I've only used salt pork once before and that's definately the way to go.
I have two packages of Jiffy cornbread mix. I'm gonna throw some cayenne and sugar in there before I mix it and bake it.

Sounds good. I put onion in mine too. And cook up some sausage if I don't have any ham or salt pork.

i think it's cool that you can ask that question and everyone knows exactly what you are talking about.
Out here in CA if I asked someone about a pot of beans they would either look at me like I was nuts or make some comment regarding refried beans.
I still make my beans though and I put in garlic salt, bacon, pepper, salt and water. As they get close to being done, I add a can of Rotel, which is almost impossible to find out here.

For navy beans, I like a carrot or two sliced up. Salt pork, or if you're concerned about fat use chicken bullion. For pintos, add a chopped pepper & onion but only after the beans are nearly finished cooking.
