Our boy Homey received the Mary Lawless Service Award today for his work in founding the John 3:16 Legal Clinic, which provides free legal aid to people who stay at the John 3:16 Mission. WTG, Holmes! :D

Yep, I especially like it when people do good deeds out of the kindness of their own heart instead of government making people do them by force.

Congratulations, Homey.

Heh. Winning awards for inflicting lawyers on the needy. ;)

Seriously, indigent defense is one of the more noble things that the American and State Bar Asssociations get involved with. It shows an absolute commitment to the ideal that everyone, no matter their social station, is entitled to vigorous defense. It ain't like anyone is getting rich in that line of work. I find the name of your foundation absolutely appropriate, by the way-defense of the defenseless is something I think Jesus would be happy to have John 3:16 associated with.

Heh. You're working on being a trial lawyer. You participate in indigent defense. You're against capital punishment.

I'll have you voting Democrat in no time. :D

naw, i just meant you and me both getting in sideways or something about being stupid. i didn't mean "you" i meant "us". it was an offer of sorts in which i would take part.

but, really: there's this, and the public schools concerns....it's not very macho rugged free-market conservatism.....what's next homey takes a trip to Lenin's tomb? hey! :D

Thanks guys. I've never made abig deal about this, but it is tremendously rewarding and I will continue as long as I'm breathing.

The way I see it is this. If "....with liberty and justice for all" means anything other than the last clause of the Pledge of Allegiance, everyone should have access to the courts. Sure, you get a lawyer if you're charged with a felony and can't afford one per the 6th Amendment.

Problem is, if you have a legal problem and some jerk (not OUr "Jerk") needs suing, or you need a lawyer to cross swords with some gubmint bureaucrat, if you can't afford a lawyer, you gotta lay down and take it.

In American life, people who get hosed by "the man" (or a mean landlord, uber-greedy creditor, or are denied governent benefits for no good reason) have absolutely no alternative but to lay down for it if they can't afford a lawyer.

I figure, if you are given the gift of the opportunity to obtain a legal education, you owe it to your people, all of them, to give back by helping those who can't afford counsel. That whole "to whom much is given, much is expected" chestnut.

Sometimes, all it takes is a strongly worded letter to said jerkola. Other times, we file a lawsuit. That works pretty good too and they usually back-off. I take special pleasure in going after dead beat dads who don't pay their court-ordered child support.

Sometimes, a person comes in with a tale of woe, but we check out every story. If the person is not giving us the whole story, or we find out it's not the way the person told us, they are respectfully and politely told we can't help them.

The bottomline, at least to me is, our Lord and Savior told us all "as you have done for the least of these, so you thou have done for Me." Matthew 25:31-46. I may be a dumb Okie from Carter County, but that means when I work to make some poor pathetic person's life a little easier, I'm doing it for my Lord.

Anyhoo, don't worry. I'm still a rightie, I just abhor injustice. Period.

P.S. You don't have to be staying at Tulsa's John 3:16 Mission to avail yourselves of our services. You just have to be poor. We're there, every "third Saturday" (we don't publish dates because poor folks don't have Blackberry's or appointment books. ) From 10am until we've seen everyone who turns up for help.

You're against capital punishment.

Dang skippy. I was pleased to hear the Governor of New Jersey ended it there on Thursday. During his announcement, he justified his action by saying, "there is no way to be sure we are not executing an innocent person." It is my hope it will be ended all across the fruited plain by the end of the next decade.

I kind of feel the way you do. too. The whole Joyce Gilcrest thing kind of put it into perspective. The deal is this, though: If you're going to get rid of the death penalty, at least make prison a very miserable place for murderers. No cable TV, no weight room, and make them turn big rocks into small rocks for 12 hours a day.

The long and short of it is, if you know a NE Oklahoma poor person who needs a lawyer, and it does NOT involve a criminal matter, have them show up at Tulsa's John 3:16 Mission (606 N. Cheyenne) any third Saturday at 10am.

I agree with that sentiment ....however I would make prisoners do data entry for 12 hours a day. Nothing is more mind numbingly boring than data entry.

Oh, and congrats homey.
