Houston Cougars has hired Oklahoma Sooners co-offensive coordinator Kevin Sumlin as its head coach, a person told of the decision said Thursday morning.

Sumlin would replace Art Briles, who resigned Nov. 28 to take the top job at Baylor.

Sumlin has been Oklahoma's co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach for the past two seasons, after three seasons as specials teams and tight ends coach.

Sumlin was assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for two years at Texas A&M; he also has coached at Purdue, Minnesota, Wyoming and Washington State.

Sumlin will be the eighth minority college football coach in the former Division I-A. Sumlin, 43, was a linebacker at Purdue from 1983 to 1986.

Other candidates considered by Houston included Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Haywood and former Houston coach Jack Pardee.

Joe Schad reports on college football for ESPN.

Who are we going to bring in as passing game coordinator or will we promote internally?

Josh Heupel seems like a good fit.

So I guess UH didn't want 71 year old run and gun???

Says something of the coaching machine we have to be sending out HCs!

I concur, but isn't Cale higher in the line of succession?

Bob Stoops should have no problem replacing Sumlin. Bob runs a head coach prep academy. Sumlin is the sixth Stoops assistant to take a head coaching job.

Josh's stats were better.

I concur, but isn't Cale higher in the line of succession? In terms of seniority, yeah. But, the general consensus is that Heupel will be promoted.

This is actually a good fit for Sumlin and UofH. He can recruit that area well and can make a decent team based on their league. He will be missed but best of luck to him and his family.

I'm happy for Sumlin. I would much rather he take a head coaching gig than go back to A&M as Sherman's OC, which I saw rumored on ESPN a few weeks ago. Sumlin can probably convince some of those Houston kids that they really don't want to go to OSU. All he has to do is put in a tape and show what his pass plays did to them the past few years.

Another reason that this is a fantastic move for Sumlin is that Houston has had success in C-USA, and can probably continue to do so. This is a great stepping-stone job for him.

Wasn't he supposed to be a great recruiter? If so, we will need to get someone in that can replace that part of the system.

What effect will this have on the remaining WR recruits?

They already said that Jeff Fowler WR or whatever his name is already decommitted and went to A&M......WHY? They dont throw the ball, this makes no sense. I must be missing something. Hopefully we can get that Julio Jones guy and keep Owens.

We have to get Owens before we can keep him. Dejuan Miller though has said he's staying with us no matter what.
