I wish I had the OKC news channels. I get stuff out of Sherman/Dennison and they haven't said much about it. Down here in mountain/lake/trees country there isn't any ice.

Will I be able to drive to Chickasha from Ardmore today?

I had power this morning, but not sure how much longer it'll be on cause the lines are pretty saggy, even bending the poles themselves.

I'm at work, we have one phase out, which means no heat and everything else is shaky

I have to go from Edmond to MWC. Anybody know what kind of shape I-35 is in?

OUDoc
12/10/2007, 10:18 AM
No, but MWC is a mess. A lot of broken tree limbs and power lines. My office has power (on Douglas), but the hospital is on generator power only.
I-40 is slick, but passable.
Hefner Parkway has a ditched car every 1/4 mile.

BTW, my power at the office just fluttered and came back on.

Just got a call from the pharmacy and they told me not to even bother getting out since the power is out. Which is good because I don't have to get out in this but bad because I don't get paid to sit at home and some of my poor co-workers are sitting there in the cold. Meanwhile up here in south Edmond, the power still continues to hold.....

I have a new appreciation for the soldiers at the Battle of the Bulge. I can imagine this is just a very, very, very small portion of what they went through. I probably only got three hours of sleep last night because branches kept snapping.

Two big limbs have hit the house - just some gutter damage and a little shingle damage. Our pool cover is torn. The back side of our patio table is crushed. We're going to have to replace our back fence (but we were going to have to do that anyway). It's gotten a bit worse since I took these pictures, but mostly just a bunch of limbs in the yard.

Other than that, we're healthy and warm - at least we have power.

Ah, the joys of home ownership, eh Rhino?

In January my mom had tons of damage in Muskogee from her pine trees. My grandmother had a huge pine tree behind her house and it was stripped. It looked like a totem pole afterwards.

I guess pine trees don't hold up so well in ice storms.

The city is re-doing the drainage ditch in the backyard so they cut down all the trees in June but the front yards in the neighborhood are all drooping and snapping. I'll think I'll go to Home Depot and get a chain saw and help the neighbors.

How much does a good chain saw cost? I'd just like to break even on the cost of a chain saw. I'd think neighbors would rather pay me something than paying those tree trimmers who charge out the wazzoo.

So, I was planning to take the whole week off to harvest pecans - even went out shaking trees and picking up limbs all weekend. No need to waste leave now.... so here I am back at work.

Our power went out at home in the middle of the night. Still isn't up. We had ham and eggs cooked on top of the fireplace insert I bought momma last year. It's our only heat, but it does a damn fine job keeping la casa toasty. At about 7:30 a big limb fell across our PVC fence and broke the hell out of it and knocked a rain gutter off the house. I stood on the porch and it sounded like rifle shots everywhere with limbs breaking in all the woods that surrounds the house.

Speaking of rifle shots, at about 8 or so I'm standing in the kitchen looking out the back window at a brand new calf (why do cows always drop their calves in the ****ty weather?) and right there about 50 yards from the calf is a coyote. I grab the ol' .22-250, and when I opened the door the coyote froze. I dropped his felonious *** right where he stood.

Now if we could just get the power on before all the meat in the freezers goes bad...

tommieharris91

The freezers are outside in the garage. As long as it stays this cold we'll be alright. But reading about the possibility of 7-8 days without power (us hillbillies are always the last to get power turned back on) worries me a tad. I supposed I could just fire up the generator, but I'd rather not.

And now the power is off at work in Norman. I'm on battery power on the laptop. They better send us home soon or I'm gonna go postal.

I spent a fun half an hour chipping the 3/4 of an inch ice off of my car so I could get in it and see. It's extra fun because my car has no real heater to speak of. Still have power on my side of town though, so I'm weathering it fairly well.

Roads in town are fine, but most everything's shut down because of power outages and all that fun stuff.

Boarder
12/10/2007, 01:21 PM
Power went off last night and when I went to plug in the neat new generator cord I got the generator had a 30 amp end and the box had a 20 amp end. That means two different plugs. Walmart didn't have one and everything else was closed.

I'm about to go home and rewire with the new plug I got at Lowe's this morning. The roads in Norman (and south) are all perfectly fine, but man, trees everywhere. And I bet half or more of the stoplights are out in Norman. Atwoods only had lights this morning so if you went there you had to wait for someone to escort you through the store and write down the prices of what you bought. (I went to Lowe's instead).

And I haven't even really looked out the backyard. I have a ton of blackjacks so I'm sure that now I had a ton of blackjacks. Which honestly doesn't break my heart. I better go get some more chain oil.

You might as well pick up a couple extra cans of gas on the way home, Dean.

I made it through the night. The power went out for about four hours in the middle of the night. That's a scary thing because you have no idea if it's going to be hours or days before it comes back on. I could hear sirens, exploding transformers, and falling trees all night. One sound I didn't think much of until it stopped was water running off the roof as the ice melted. When it got cool enough in here for the ice to really start accumulating on the roof I started to worry. All is well now, though. I'm amazed there are still trees standing after all the ruckus. Right now I'm not feeling too eager to ever buy my own house.

Stay safe, everybody. We might get a respite this afternoon, but more is on the way.

Dean's not a very good postman...

Dude, all that "neither rain, nor sleet, nor gloom of night" bull**** is for the working stiffs. I'm an executive dammit.

Back in the day though let me tell you, I took that **** seriously. One time a tractor/trailer rig carrying mail hit some ice between Tucson and Phoenix (yes, it did ice there one time in about 1980 or so), flipped over, and tore the side out of the trailer - disgorging and shredding a **** pot of Christmas mail down Interstate 10.

What'd we do? We took a bunch of trucks up there and spent about 10 hours picking up every damn piece of mail, shreds and all, and hauled it into Tucson. Then, crews went to work piecing mail together until they could determine an address, then putting those remains in a body bag and getting them delivered before Christmas. We were delivering some of that mail for almost 30 hours straight.

When I worked in Vehicle Maintenance later on, I've towed mail carrier's vehicles out of rain-swollen ditches who got stuck - and went ahead and hand-carried the customers' mail on that side of the creek - sometimes miles away.

Yeah, I was pretty badassed back in the day. Now? Not so much. **** y'all, I wanna go home now.

I probably shouldn't even tell this story.....

yesterday afternoon we were out in the pasture cleaning up limbs under the pecan trees with a 16-foot trailer. My youngest son and the two dogs were riding on the ice-covered trailer. They were having fun kind of slip/sliding around a little, so, when we were heading across the pasture I thought it'd be funny to pick up a little speed and then slam on the brakes.

All I saw in the rearview were one kid and two dogs with sheer panic looks on their faces as they came flying forward and disappeared between the truck and trailer. The kid managed to hang on to the rail, but both dogs just shot right out under it. I was cracking up.

Then, the dumbasses trusted me enough to get right back on the trailer. I immediately hit the gas, and they all went sliding right off the back end of the trailer. It was great entertainment. For me.

Well, I lost power about 11:30 last night. At about 3, I woke up to see part of the tree in the front yard had fallen. I was afraid the rest of the tree would crash onto my car. This morning I was going to move it, but the doors were frozen shut. About 20 minutes later, the tree fell on it. Thankfully there was no body or window damage. The tree cracked the ice on my car, so I could open the door and move it.

I'll post pics later. This is the same tree that survived May 3 tornado, so I'm hopeful it can be salvaged.

We've been without power since about noon yesterday. I hope it comes back on soon or we are gonna lose a decent amount of meat in the deep freeze.

We're pretty lucky though, we have a fire place, and I have a little portable propane heater, plenty of candle and a good book. We had a nice evening by the fire. Was able to set the alarm on the cell phone to get up for work this morning.

All in all, it could be a lot worse. Going to have plenty of limbs to clean up once it clears up.

Take care you hillbillies.

We'd gladly trade you our schizophrenic weather for yours. And by that I mean on Saturday, it was in the 70's when I was putting up Christmas decorations outside.

Cold front moves through on Sunday and it's cold and drizzly through this morning when I wake up to temps in the 60's because the cold front backed up and came back across as a warm front. Tomorrow, that same front is supposed to move back across as a cold front and drop temps back into the 30's.

Another day with no power at the Deanarosa. Hooked up the generator last night so we could run the fridge/freezers and a TV and the blower on the wood burning stove.

What sucks though is no water when you're on your own well. If you have to take a dump you take a gallon jug of water in there with you to flush. Everybody pees outside. No showers, etc. We've been cooking on top of the wood burning stove. It all kind of reminds me of my youth, and also makes me really appreciate the conveniences of a modern world. The kids are still stupid about it though. This morning, one of the boys keeps jamming the garage door opener to shut the garage. I just look at him and he goes "the batteries must be dead in the remote." I go "boy, are you really that stupid?" He goes "oh, you have to have electricity to shut the garage?" I go "yes, you really are that stupid."

Same thing last night with the TV remote. Mashing buttons wondering why the TV doesn't come on.

And now it's raining like a big bitch. Buckets and buckets of it. At least it's melting the ice, but I don't know when we're gonna get power back. Good thing there's a shower at the gym here at work...

Back when wireless 'hotspots' were a new and kinda cool thing, T-Mobile got Borders, FedEx/Kinko's and S'bucks to get on board with their pay-as-you-go wireless.

It would be hard to believe that the continued fee-based wireless at these major retail outlets will continue once their contract expires with T-Mob...although, that is complete wishful thinking.

When I am in T, I like the coffee shop on Cherry Street to do some free wireless'ing...not sure it is big enough to be a good study place tho. Another really comfortable and quiet place is the lobby of the Renaissance Hotel...nobody bothers ya, restrooms available and a bar!

He said it's really sad looking. He said the neighbor's tree across the street speared their roof, luckily no one was hurt.

He says they are doing ok, lots of candles, flashlights, blankets and thank goodness for a gas stove to cook on.

Yeah, I was wiring the plug in box in the dark with a flashlight. Then didn't have the right plug on one end of the generator wire. Nothing like necessity to make you finish stuff.

I used this one and wired the 220 circuit to the well. I can turn it on when we need some pressure.
