The players sure can rack up individual awards.

http://forums.hornfans.com/php/wwwthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=football&Number=5355199&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=0&fpart=

BTW, does OU do anything like this? It doesn't sound like Stoops' philosophy.

What's not listed is the players on the team who have their eye dead-set on the Fulmer Cup ;)

Unbelievable.

They completely forgot about the most outstanding waterboy.

Reminds me of little league t-ball as a kid where every team got a pizza party and every kid got a trophy at the end of the year, regardless of the record.

This must have been Texas' pizza party.

Yay team!

I just hope they keep doing that...all those participant trophies keep my company rolling in money! lol

Award for Tenacity

OMG that's dumb. "Mom, Coach Brown said I'm the most tenacious!"

Outstanding Quarterback
Colt McCoy

Colt had a lot of stiff competition from his fellow longhorns this year. What kind of message would it send if you had a team-specific award for "outstanding quarterback" and didn't give it to the starter?

Instead of being an achievement for getting one, this kind of thing turns "awards" into a punishment for not getting one.

More gems:

We've gone beyond playskool "everyone's a winner" to the corporate sponsored "everyone's a winner" award at the college level?

We have an award for every player that gets hurt, and it's sponsored by a health insurance company? This one is awesome.

Either the thread was removed or the admins at whornfans.com traced the link from here and blocked it. Thanks for the gems posted here to read. Classic Mack Brown stuff, eh?

This is hilarious. Hornfans actually removed the thread altogether. Too bad for them that mackbrown.com is out there.

Here is the photo gallery from mackbrown.com. Check out the one for the rehab award.

By the way, someone needs to pass a note to the UT staff that you are to wear ties and not earth-tone sports suits to an award ceremony. How special can these awards truly be if everyone shows up as if they had just finished happy-hour at the country club?

HOw has no one brought up the Roy Williams leadership award? I've never seen a guy whine and cry more when they were losing. In fact, Gary Danielson said during one OU-ut telecast tha Roy Williams would never see the ball again if he was playing on his team. He was throwing his usual fit while eting his arse kicked by OU. I love that they give a leadership award in this guys name.

...wait, now that I think about it, maybe they are naming it for TGRW. That would make alot more sense since he showed some leadership in the Texas game. Never mind. :-)

How do you give 4 defensive backs the outstanding defensive backs award when you are ranked 108 out of 118 teams in pass defense. :-)

BTW, didnt Royal play defense at OU? I thought he had some record fr interceptions. Is it strange to give an offensive award in his name?

I think they need to change that to the Ricky Williams Rehab award, and what kind of community service is this ?

This is funny and symptomatic of the whole Mack Brown: wants to please everyone, doesn't want to hurt anyone's feelings philosophy. I hope they keep doing what they're doing down there for a long time to come.

I have a feeling TFRW gave a few bucks to the UT athletic program and this is one of those small ways of recognizing it.

If he gave enough he could have his name on the Roy Williams Excellent Sportsmanship Practice Field, etc if he wanted.

Reading hornfans today, it appears that some Texas fans have taken the same angle that the Nebraskans have, eg "we're just too classy (and too academically strict) to win in this cut-throat environment. I'd rather be an upstanding citizen like Mack and not win."

When you've reached that argument you should just quit that particular sport.

Oh, and apparently these awards are one of the reasons UT has such an edge in recruiting. The kids just love being recognized like this at a fancy banquet.

Jeez, I can't believe any of you folks don't recognize that these awards are from SUCH a prestigious program that they far outweigh the Heisman, Outland, Lombardi, etc.

heh,

Yeah, nothing a bunch of 19 & 20 year old males like better then to have to get dressed up and go listen to a bunch of old people talk for a couple of hours, while passing out what are undoubtedly recognized as a bunch of cheesy awards.

...not that they would admit such scorn to the public. ;)

"Okay, they are now going to give out the Levitra Award for "Most Enthusiastic Backup on Defense. I am so nervous! Please, please, please let it be me!! C'mon God, just this once. Let me win this award. Yes!!! Yes!!! I won!! I won!! I can't wait to call my mom! And that pesky brother-in-law who said I would never win anything playing football. Today is the happiest day of my life!!"

They were set to be given the "2007 Most Determined Team" award, but then they lost to Texas A&M. They then had to settle for the "2007 Pretty Doggone Determined" award.

Anyone else notice how pathetic Hornfans must be? They have a thread describing an official sanctioned university event, and they have to remove it out of sheer embarrassment.

That's truly embarrassing.

OU traditionally gives 4 awards:

Don Key
Bob Kalsu
Derrick Shepard Most Inspirational Walk-on Award

Above are all character-based, not based on performance

They also give the Scout Team Player of the Year Award.

If you can somehow get your name on the guest list, you should be able to win something. If you don't initially, there will be an awkward moment of silence while the coaching staff dreams one up for you.

"Yes, old Mr. Monster over there. He... he has been a true inspiration and... um, he is certainly deserving of our... "Most Inspirational Award." Yes. Very inspirational... that there Mr. Monster. Come on up here and make a little speech, will ya? I'm sorry that your... um... plaque got lost in the mail. Our apologies. Your plaque will come in the mail later."
