I have a 98 Explorer 2 sport with 160,000. Just got new tires and noticed on the old ones that the insides only were worn way more than the outsides on the fronts. The tire place said they couldn't align the car because the lower ball joints need replacing. They quoted 2 hours of labor at $80 an hour and $170 for parts.

This is not my normal place, and haven't had time to call them yet, but does this sound right? I've poked around on the net and seem to have found ball joints for substantially lower, but don't know if they are the right ones.

Do auto places let you bring in your own parts and just charge you for labor?

Thanks for any help.

I only drive this car 100 miles per week. If I didn't fix it right away, how long would these tires last. I will probably buy a new car in about a year. Don't want to spend money I don't have to.

Then dont sweat it . 5200 miles on a set of tires should be easy . unless the whole front end is falling out which I doubt .
Why I said take it to another alignment shop . I bet they find something diferant Or Nothing wrong . . But if your only wanting em to last that long you should be fine

Cool. I've got to get it inspected this month, so I'll have them look at it when I do.

Thanks again.

Olevet said it's the Pfetzer valve.
He'll need some 3-in-1 oil and some gauze pads.

I had the same problem on my z28. Quoted for a outrageous amount too. So I basically went and bought the ball joints myself like 25 a piece if I remember right..or maybe 30 ... Rented the the tool for a 100... you get all of that back when you return it. and I saved myself like 200 dollars. Or if the labor is 80 thats not so bad, just go and get the ball joints yourself from autozone, napa, or O'reillys and just get the cost of labor.

labor was $60 an hour.
