Defining the set of integers as "the positive and negative whole numbers" bugs the $hit out of me. There's no such thing as a negative whole number. Whole numbers are all non-negative.

A correct integer definition is: "the set of all whole numbers and their opposites."

if "opposites" = "inverses" then I'll let you slide on your definition.

I don't think "opposite" is a mathematical term. You seem pretty uptight about the definition for a guy that doesn't even get it right himself ;)

However, this site disagrees with you

nteger printable version
An integer is a whole number (not a fraction) that can be positive, negative, or zero. Therefore, the numbers 10, 0, -25, and 5,148 are all integers.

Opposites refer to additive inverses. There are also multiplicative inverses.

Two numbers are opposites if their sum is zero.

The techterm definition is wrong. Must have been written by a computer scientist, not a mathematician.

well, it was a beautiful summer day, a little over a year ago. I was playing in our local two man best ball tournament and it had been a particularly trying day, I was somewhere in the neighborhood of 6 or 7 over through 16 holes, and just not happy with much of anything. Stepping up to the 17th tee, a majestic par three of 186 yards from the back tees, I selected the 6 iron and honestly had little hope of hitting anything close...I was just hoping to find a green.

As I looked up after the strike, I knew it felt pretty good and to my surprise it was on a decent heading, relatively straight at the flag, and I thought, hey I hit a green...as it was coming down I started to realize that it was actually going to be good...within 15 feet or so...and it just got better..it hit about 2 inches behind and left of the cup and hopped backwards into the cup.

there was much rejoicing. and an expensive bar tab. the end.

My favorite grammar mistakes relate to the misuse of commas and and the inability of so many people to understand the difference between plural and possessive as well as contractions.

One example: There's a sign down the road from my place here in Vegas that reads "car stereo's".

not lazy substitute but rather a school mathematics term. Opposite is used as a informal synonym for additive inverse, just as "reciprocal" is term defined and used before a more formal "multiplicative inverse."

Truthfully, SAS, have you never heard -x read as "the opposite of x" ?

I can see the term being used that way, in an extremely informal way, but it doesn't seem as descriptive. If I ever heard it that way, it was long ago and I've forgotten. I can see it as a term that children would comprehend quickly. In upper level math, we've never used the term that way. Inverse is a defined property.

I can also see the term being used more regionally or even a different cultural setting. Not where I'm from anyway.

Are you from Texas? Opposite is a defined term in the national publishers' algebra texts such as McDougal Littell, Prentice Hall, and Saxon(now w/ Harcourt). These texts are on the Texas state adoption list.

Terms like opposite and reciprocal wouldn't be used in abstract algebra courses because the sets used in groups and rings are not limited to sets of numbers. One wouldn't ask about a "reciprocal of a matrix", but rather if it has a multiplicative inverse.
