Adrian Peterson in Jim Brown Territory

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/sports.aol.com/fanhouse/media/2007/12/adrianpetersonlions.jpgFor a running back, averaging six yards per carry for a season is something like hitting .400. Jim Brown did it once. Barry Sanders did it once. O.J. Simpson did it once. And every single other player who gets mentioned in a discussion of the greatest running backs ever failed to do it at all.

So as Mr. Irrelevant points out, (http://misterirrelevant.com/index.php/2007/12/04/purple-jesus-pursues-an-exalted-record/) Vikings rookie running back Adrian Peterson (http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/tag/AdrianPeterson/)is doing something extraordinary right now. With four games remaining, Peterson is averaging 6.5 yards per carry. Even if opposing teams sell out to stop the run over the next four games, it's easy to picture Peterson rushing 80 times for 400 yards, which would put him over six a carry for the season.

The NFL record for average gain in a season is actually 8.45 yards, set by Michael Vick (http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/tag/MichaelVick/)last year. That's a record that might never be broken. But among running backs, the Jim Brown mark of 6.4 yards per carry in 1963 is the gold standard. Peterson has a real shot at it.

Ok, take AD's name out of it.....if we're talking about X back doing something in a season that only Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, and the Juice have accomplished, isn't that a serious case for MVP?

It is awesome to know that you witnessed greatness - like watching Jordan in his first couple of seasons -

AD can become an all timer if he can get lucky with injuries... He is doing this is for Minn- what would he be doing if he were on a 90s Dallas or Bills team.

Tavaris Jackson has actually been throwing pretty well the last couple of weeks. The Vikes stand a decent chance of being 10-6 at season's end, since the last four teams they'll play don't have winning records.

Would love for AD to win the MVP, but with Tom Brady having a great year as well, having been in the league longer, not to mention the greater success of his team, well...Brady has to be the hands-down favorite to win MVP.

Kind of like Bradford not being a serious Heisman contender in large part because he's a frosh, I think the same thing will largely affect AD and any MVP consideration....not that that's fair.

Minnesota should have the greatest play-action passing game in the NFL. If T. Jackson continues his upward curve of passing proficiency the Vikings will dangerous in post-season play....should they get there. Minnesota message boards say he's a different qb in the last two games.

Hope this is true. AD running behind a good O-line, and with a QB that is a serious threat throwing the ball would be teh awesome. Hope they meet the Cowboys in the NFC Championship game!

...but I would pull for the Boys! :D

Is there only 1 MVP awarded in the NFL? Or is there 1 for the NFC and 1 for the AFC like MLB baseball.

For some reason I was thinking each conference had an MVP award and possibly offensive and defensive POY awards too. Or is that just an offensive and defensive ROY award?

I thought maybe he was 40, but turns out he's only 29. He's got 11 years to go before manhood.

Brady has it sewn up. If Adrian wouldn't have missed two games and gained over 2000 yards, then it might have gotten interesting.
