Alright gang, I'm cheap! I like stuff for free. I know there is a lot of freeware out there that is compareable to other big name software. Please give your opinion on software that you have tried that is either free or very cheap, and is almost as good as the name brand software. I'll go first:

Mozilla: Thunderbird and Firebird both are good.

Open Office for word processing and spreadsheeting is pretty good too.

In addition to SB-S&D, I usually run Ad-Aware since there's always a bit of overlap.

Well, this might explain it! I bought a Reveal WaveXtreme 32 sound card that
wouldn't work with any of my dos games. After weeks of trying to contact
Reveal with no success, I tried to take the card back to Best Buy. The
manager refused to take it back even when I threw a **** fit - I even called
the corporate office. The funny thing is that the check out lady at the
return desk said that she had heard Reveal went out of business. Well,
needless to say I will now never buy a Reveal product NOR step foot into Best
Buy. Both companies could care less about their customers.

Just my $.02 (damn, that felt good).

What are the features of the google toolbar? In Mozilla, you can do a google search from the address bar. You can also stop popups and javascripts. What else does the google toolbar do? (besides track your browsing habits, of course)

I guess it's just a quick and dirty way for searches. You can choose not to have your browsing habits sent to google upon initial installation if you want.

Not sure of the difference between the google search window in mozilla and the actually IE google toolbar.

In MyIE2, you can download various kinds of features and plugins, the google toolbar being one. MyIE2 and mozilla have pretty similar popup blockers.

I don't guess there's really anything too special about the toolbar, I just find it very nice to have.

Thanks Norm. My 90 day trial period of Norton ran just ran out and I loaded the free AVG and sygate. Both together have a smaller memory footprint (only about half) than did just the anti-virus portion of Norton.

All i want anti-virus to do is scan email attachments and downloads and that's it. AVG seems to do it perfectly.

And sygate seems to be more flexible than ZoneAlarm. For example, I can block Dreamweaver from talking to the other computers on my home network, but still allow it's ftp functions to ... uh... function.

Norm In Norman
3/11/2004, 01:15 PM
I'm glad you like them.

I don't use the email scan because I use Eudora. Since I have realtime scanning turned on, if I get a virus through email it checks it immediately anyway.

And that's the exact reason I like Sygate. You get much more control. Before my access got blocked here at work, I set it Sygate up where only my machine here could connect to VNC and a web server (for MP3s) at home. All other traffic would be blocked.

Funny that you brought this to the top today, because I was about to.

Here is something to add to the list:

http://www.jedit.org/

It is for editing - stuff. I just downloaded it for editing PHP files and it is damn cool. I think it has like 90 languages built in that it will automatically syntax highlight (including HTML, although I don't know how featured it is for this). Since it 100% java, it will work for any OS too. And there are a ton of plugins. I wanted the feature where there is a tab for every open document and BOOM - there was a plug in that adds that.

Anyway, check it out.

I have been using jedit for a while now and it is cool but has some shortcomings (very few). First off, I like the tabbed document plugin - it's hard to develop without that. Second there is a project plug in that works pretty good. Third there is a php context menu plugin that works fairly well and the syntax highlighting is good anyway. And I love the collapse stuff (I think they got that from .Net). Of course you can indent a block of text by highlighting the text and pressing tab and ... there is too much good to count.

The things I don't like are that you can't drag and drop selections, context menus don't change depending on where you right click, and there is nothing that gives you a handy list of functions in when you are writing a program. I would like it to also expand include files, but the project manager kinda helps with this. And I wish I could make it look more "windows" like.

Overall, it is really well done and that good far outweighs the bad. I guess I need to learn java and write my own damned plugins.

As if you care...

I switched to Thunderbird a couple of weeks ago. There are a few things I don't like about it:

1. It doesn't just quote the selected text when doing a reply. This is something that I ALWAYS do when replying (in Eudora). I hate for there to be 100 levels of reply in an email.

2. Accounts can't share an inbox. At home, I have like 7 email accounts and I don't want to have to click on 7 different inboxes to view my mail. I ended up creating a filter on every account that moves the mail to one centralized inbox, but I still don't like having a list of accounts sitting there all the time. I think each mail folder should have the ability to have one or more accounts in it, so you can share an inbox or not.

3. It doesn't have spell check as you type. You can only Spell Check all at once. This of course adds another step to sending emails, because you hit send, then hit ignore or fix on all of your mispelled words, then hit send again. This has to be a feature soon.

4. The column headers for folders are the same as the inbox. Since I have one folder where I put replies to certain people, having the "Sender" column header is pretty much useless. Having the recipient column header on the inbox is sorta stupid too. Right now I have them both on.

The stuff I like...
1. It's free.

2. It has built in junk mail filtering that works pretty damn well, probably better than Eudora's.

3. Extensions. Extensions, extensions, extenions. Extensions. It is infinitely expandable with those things. I have an extension that checks the weather every 15 minutes. I have an extension that checks all of the mail accounts at once. There are several more that I haven't even tried.

4. Filtering mailbox views. For example, right now I have it set to only view unread emails.

5. The import feature. It is sorta buggy, but it did import all of my Eudora email and address book. it also imported another address book in csv format fairly well.

6. In the address book, if you have a street address it has a little button called "Get Map" that shells out to mapquest and the map of that address.

7. The filters are full featured. There are a ton of options.

8. There is a "plain text" option, so I can ensure all of my emails are sent in plain text. Eudora had this too. What Eudora didn't have is the ability to mark the addresses in the address book as "html, plain text, or unknown." That way it will automatically strip HTML from email to people who don't like html formatted emails.

9. It autolooks up addresses in your address book when you type in something into the to field. You can type part of the name, the address, the nickname, or the screen name and it automatically fills in the email addy. I dig the screen name field.

There is probably a ton more that I like but am forgetting. It is a damn good email client - much better than outlook (IMO) and at least as good as Eudora Pro. I say - get it.

Oh, and I like firefox too. There is a cool tab extension that lets you move tabs around, rename tabs, go to the last used tab (instead of the right tab) when closing a tab, and a ton of other stuff. There is also an extension that you can select a word, right click on it, and go to "definition" and it will automatically go to dictionary.com with the definition. There is also a cool extension where you can view any link or page in IE by right clicking and selecting the menu option. unfortunately, soe web designers only design for IE, so this is a nice shortcut.

hmmm sounds like I'll have to try it. Xemacs has a whole lot of functionality that Ive just been too busy to try to figure out. sometimes its hard to figure out how to get it to do what you want it to for some tasks, but in every case, at least for me, there does exist a way. Since I do most of my coding in C++ or python, I am a big fan of the syntax highlighting (wont use anything that doesnt have it now) and the auto-indent....this is even better for C++ cause it will auto unindent when you put in a "}" too...with python, you have to tell it where to unindent. As for making things look more windows like...I can do without that....I've been using Unix or Linux at work for so long now that I actually prefer the way things look in FVWM or KDE to windows.....plus the fact that windows doesnt automatically copy whatever you highlight to the clipboard really gets on my damn nerves :)

I just downloaded Eclipse with 2 different php editors. I'm a bit overwhelmed right now. This php editor plugin called TruStudio seems really cool, but if I try to block comment code it crashes every time. But it shows me possible php errors in a pretty cool way. The one called phpEclipse can comment code, but it doesn't have some of the cool things I want.

Right now, for editing php I want:
Syntax highlighting
Function hints
block commenting
code folding
indenting selected text by pressing tab (unindent by shift+tab)
projects

Eclipse has a plugin where I can have it update my project on the ftp server automatically. I haven't tried this. There is also a CVS thing I haven't tried. The php editor plugins I have do most of what I want.

This thing is just so damned complicated, I am spending more time trying to figure out how/why to set it up than coding. i have the feeling it will do more than I want to do ... once I figure it out.

Dude, have you tried the Zend Studio (www.zend.com)? It seriously rules. It's not free, but it completely rox ballz. It will do everything you're looking for with the exception of code folding.

It's styled much like the M$ Visual Studio and there are many different included configurations for the layout. It has autocompletion when you instantiate a class, can debug live if you load the Zend Server-Side app onto your webserver. It's simply the best. If you're writing PHP it is a must have.

Dreamweaver MX & MX 2004 has, to a lesser degree, that functionality. It's not as good as Zend but it's not bad. I may be able to help you find a discounted copy if you want don't intend it for commerical use.

Norm In Norman

I've heard that Zend was awesome for PHP. Actually, we are trying to get a product called VS.php. It is a php plugin for visualstudio.Net. I used it in trial mode for a couple of weeks and it works awesomely. Since we are all used to writing VB, VC++, and .Net, it's really easy to get going with it. The only thing I DON'T like about it is you have to put your project files in the php directory or it won't find the functions in your includes/requires. Eclipse allows you to have your source code in one place and your project files in another.

I'm just trying to find a free alternative one since there is probably no way they will get us vs.php. They said they would, but I don't believe them.

One thing I like about eclipse is it works with plugins. The code folding built in to it doesn' really have enough functionality, but there is a plugin that gives it more. Of course I haven't figured out how to get it to work...

Veritas
12/10/2004, 05:05 PM
That's what married me to Zend as opposed to VS.php...the finding of function in includes/requires. Of course, VS.php is less than half the price, so...

I used VS.php for awhile but I ended up going back to Zend...some of the obtuse little things (like the project files deal) annoyed the heck out of me.

The funny thing about all of this is I haven't been coding seriously in php but for 3 months or so and I was just told all new stuff we do is going to be coded in some sort of java. i can't see java anything being as good as php or having help like php.net. To me, that site makes php one of the best languages. I LOVE php.

Oh - and we get to develop our java with jdeveloper. it better be a lot better than the version I used a couple of years ago. If not, I'm gonna quit on principal.

I downloaded AVG 7.0 a week ago. It's quite a bit better. Now it will scan your email no matter what it is. i guess it acts like a layer between your email client and your network connection so all incoming and outgoing email goes through it.

Unfortunately, the log only shows like 50 things while doing a system scan now, so you have to click on the vault to see if it detected anything when it's done. i think it's a bug.

On my mom's machine it found several viruses that were in her Eudora mailboxes. In fact, it wouldn't let Thunderbird import her Eudora mail until the virus emails were deleted (they were all in her Eudora trash).

Somehow she hadn't ever clicked on a virus even though she had been sent several. She knows little about computers too. Go figure.

Let's add Microsoft Spyware to the fray, although it may be a pay software soon. it seems to work pretty good.

Also I figured out how to import multiple eudora accounts into Thunderbird, if anyone is interested.

quick question on AVG with email. For some reason, I have to turn off email scanning on Norton in order to use SSL-enabled thunderbird. The reason is that it can no longer scan emails as they come in. However, according to symantec's website, Im still protected, for some reason that I don't remember.

anyhoo, is this a 'feature' of all virus scanners, or just norton?

Well, technically if you have autoprotect on your virus scanner will catch the virus before it gets written to you hard drive. I used to rely on this sort of protection, but I think I prefer it scanning my email directly instead.

No clue on whether Thunderbird SSL with AVG. I'm not too sure if cox's email supports this or not. I guess I should try.

OpenOffice.Org will be at 2.0 pretty soon. Thought I'd let you know.

Also, I found this page on afterdawn:

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/

Interestingly enough, there is a codec for both real video and quick time there so you don't have to install the real versions. QT has to be installed with ITunes now. They are in the same installer. With these codecs you don't have to bother AND they don't have any possible spyware in them. I don't have to keep turning off automatic updates for those programs any more.

For you people with a few mp3s that need to be organized, check this out:

http://www.mp3tag.de/en/download.html

I just added the track tag to a whole album based on the filename with a couple of clicks. I think it can pick up the info from a cddb too.

My goal is to get all of the correct information into the tags then put all of my MP3s in this format:

FirstLetterOfBand\Band\yyyy - Album\## - Title.mp3

Then I think I want the playlist to be in the band directory. For example, a song would look like:

d:\MP3s\A\Aerosmith\1974 - Get Your Wings\01 - Same Old Song And Dance.mp3

And a playlist would look like:

d:\MP3s\A\Aerosmith\1974 - Get Your Wings.m3u

Any comments on organizing them like this?

Anyway, the program is good. Just read the help file and you will be going in no time.

One of the worst things I've done with my mp3s ever was to to let iTunes automatically organize it for me. Now it's in a jillion folders. And for those songs that didn't have id3 tags on them, but had all the info in a really long file name? iTunes shortened it so now the filename is like this:

cd2 - gilmore girls soundtrack - sam ph.mp3

What am I supposed to do with that?

What do you mean it put them in a jillion folders? Based on what? The tags? I don't like to let anything automatically do anything. Bad crap like that always happens. If it tried to org stuff based on the tags of MY mp3s - it woudl be a mess.

My other alternative to my above system is to put all the files in one artist directory and let some sort of management software take care of the rest (like WMP10 or something). Only problem with that is the same song could be in multiple albums, for instance if a song was on a live album and a regular album.

Nah, I think I like it this way.

Well, it does an honorable job of doing what it's trying to do, but it seems very messy and incomplete if you try to import mp3s that weren't ripped using iTunes.

it puts everything in:

My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Artist Name\Album Name\*.mp3

So there are 823 folders in that iTunes Music directory.

It does it based on the id3 tags and you know how well those are labelled if you don't do them yourself.

I used to make play lists in winamp by dragging individual files to the list, but that's not possible anymore without a whole lot of effort.

For example making a playlist in winamp of the lord of the rings soundtrack you'd have to go to all the following folders for one song each.

Howard Shore & Annie Lennox\The Lord of the Rings - The Return of th
Howard Shore & Ben del Maestro\The Lord of the Rings - The Return of th
Howard Shore & Billy Boyd\The Lord of the Rings - The Return of th
Howard Shore & Renee Fleming\The Lord of the Rings - The Return of th

etc.

So, it's not immediately apparent which folders contain the return of the ring soundtrack.

I guess it's not imperative since I don't use winamp as much anymore and it's easy to create play lists inside of itunes or wmp (which is what I use when I'm transferring songs to the pTunes) but if I ever wanted to get all my songs in one place again, it would be a HUGE task considering that iTunes created at least 2000 folders in the My Music directory.

Maybe this deserves it's own thread. I dunno.

Ok, in thunderbird I've noticed that you can save your searches as a folder for a while now. Well, I've used this before but didn't see any use of doing it. But today I've seen the light.

What you COULD do is have ALL of your emails in the inbox. Then instead of setting up a filter that moves your message from so and so into a folder just for them, you could could just save your search and click on it. If the email is unread, it will still bold your search just like it was in a folder. The bonus that this adds is you can use the cool filter box just for your inbox if you need to do a quick and dirty search and it will search all of your emails. You also get most of the functionality of folders even though they aren't in actual folders. Also, your email won't have to go through all of those filters every time.

I guess if I had used gmail more, all of this would have been obvious.

They have a feature similar on iTunes where you can make smart playlists. I like this feature.

I heard that the new version of the Mac OS will have smart folders for handling files and such which will make it easier to find pictures and files that, realistically, should be in more than one category.

A long time ago, Longhorn was supposed to have some sort of metatag thing built into the file system. I think they postponed/canned it. What this would do (if I remember correctly) is make it where you could do a search for (let's say) Sooners and you would get results with all pictures, mp3s, videos, or whatever that had the Sooners metatag in it. You could also do a search for like artist=Wiggles filter=*.mp3 and it would find all of your Wiggles mp3s for you. And this was supposed to be uber fast because it was built into the file system. Of course MS can't pull it off because they'll want to be backwards compatable with the old way, but it would have been really cool.

Veritas

I just couldn't get into Thunderbird. The whole issue with winmail.dat was an obstacle, and I couldn't get the filters to work the way I wanted them to. The RSS deal was decent, but I use the Sage aggregator for Firefox so it was kinda moot point. Anyway, I went back to M$ Outlook and I'm much happier.

Here's the deal I frequently run into with FOSS/alternative software: there comes a point where the time/energy required to use the alternative exceeds the benefit or satisfaction derived. And that point is pretty quickly reached for me.

Im trying it out right now. doesnt seem to use much memory, but I did have an issue with exiting and then restarting it. Im sure there are probably a few bugs with this one, but Im just happy to have virtual desktops for now.

there are also a couple of modules on the webpage that help make navigation a little easier.

consider having 2 monitors side by side on one computer. you can have different windows on each screen. a virtual desktop is the same idea, only with one monitor, and the other ones just tucked away out of view.

most civilized OS's and window managers have had this functionality built in for eons.

Mozilla Updates Firefox on Schedule

Elizabeth Montalbano, IDG News ServiceWed Nov 30,10:00 AM ET

The wait is over for the Firefox faithful, as the Mozilla Foundation released the new version of the browser as planned Tuesday.
Mozilla Reorganizes
Firefox 1.5 is available now at getfirefox.com and mozilla.com. The Mozilla site is the "new home" of Firefox and Thunderbird, replacing Mozilla.org as the download address for Mozilla's browser and open-source e-mail application.

A Mozilla spokesperson said Mozilla.com is now home to Mozilla, a taxable corporation spun out from the Mozilla Foundation in August. Mozilla will handle all of the consumer-facing software from the open-source group, as well as merchandise such as Mozilla T-shirts.

Mozilla had released three test release candidates of the browser earlier this month, as well as two beta versions, the first in September and the second in October.

Firefox, which celebrated its one-year anniversary November 9, has become a popular alternative to Microsoft Internet Explorer. In October, the total number of Firefox downloads topped 100 million.

For IE users who haven't made the leap to Firefox, version 1.5 includes a wizard that allows users to report Web sites that don't work in Mozilla's browser so developers can ensure sites working in IE also work in Firefox. The new version also includes more descriptive error-message pages and a redesigned Options/Preferences window that increases the number of category icons and moves them from the left side of the window to the top.
New Features
Other new features in the updated browser include an automatic software update mechanism, faster navigation using the "Back" and "Forward" tabs, and the capability for users to drag and drop browser tabs for reordering.

Developers also have fortified Firefox 1.5 with new support for Web standards, adding support for Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), JavaScript 1.6, and new versions of Cascading Style Sheets. SVG is a language based on Extensible Markup Language (XML) for writing sophisticated two-dimensional graphics, and JavaScript 1.6 is the latest version of the scripting language. Cascading style sheets are a World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standard for adding style elements, such as fonts, colors, and spacing, to Web documents.

In addition, the Firefox update adds better pop-up blocking and a host of security enhancements, according to Mozilla. Other new features include the addition of Answers.com to Firefox's list of search engines and a Clear Private Data function that allows users to quickly remove personal data through a menu item or keyboard shortcut.

Well, my first 5 minutes of using firefox 1.5 has been pretty good. it will now automatically clear certain privacy things for you on exit. That's like awesome. And you can move tabs around without installing an extension.

And OpenOffice 2.0 is working just as good as 1.9.whatever. It seems a bit faster, as a matter of fact. I haven't used Microsoft Office in quite some time (excluding Access).

Ok, I've been using the X1 desktop search for over a year now it seems. I paid 75 bucks for it and it's saved me a ton of time looking for junk on the old computer. It indexes pretty quickly once the inital one is over (takes a couple of hours depending on how much you tell it to index).

It indexes outlook, etc so it makes it quick to find old emails and it's pretty quick for finding individual mp3s, etc. Anyway, I love it and they just made it free.

They bundled Yahoo stuff with it, but you can opt-out of that.

OK, in trying another free, non-symantec product, any of you know about Comodo? I'm seeing some good reviews of it so far.

Oh, and Dad, I checked out a few reviews for PC-cillin, and while most of the reviewers agree that the AV is great, they were not much impressed with the firewall capabilities.

Yep, I use eclipse with the php stuff. It's awesome.

I just started using it and really like it so far . . .

just so youse guys know...I decided to go with the Comodo firewall for the time being with AVG free antivirus. they are both free, and the reviews I saw claim that Comodo kicks nearly as much *** as the top commercial personal firewalls....so we'll see. I can tell you, that its not taking up nearly the resources that Norton did.

I decided to give Comodo a shot as well . . . so far I like it. It looks like there's some other decent Comodo-related programs available as well.

Good call Ike.

I gave up on Comodo . . . couldn't get my ports forwarded correctly once I switched over for some reason.

For you audio rippers.

i dl'd a firewall from majorgeeks.com a couple weeks ago.....filseclab which had high ratings. i had suspected some high jack type stuff....so it was working great and i was happy. and then my computer bluescreened twice and had to re-install my video driver (?) ...so i unintalled the firewall. but, i don't see why that should have happened. Now, Firefox has been (still is) running kind of screwy for a couple weeks.

does that make any sense?

Hmm. Did you run spybot or another spyware finding program?

i've got webroot spysweeper, ad-aware....and AVG free....and i was able to tell spysweeper to not block the firewall. spysweeper shows nothing when i've scanned since....if that's what you are asking. i have spybot, but have not run it much lately after i bought spysweeper.

any help is appreciated.

I'd install the sygate one and see if that fixes whatever is wrong. It couldn't hurt. There is probably some sort of windows neworking file messed up somewhere. I remember Norton Antivirus used to mess your network connection up after you uninstalled it - and this was before they had a firewall.

Of course this could end up compounding your problem.

I'd backup any data you don't want to lose and re-install your OS if you still can't figure out what's up.

I need to do that at home myself. I think I saw where some PC expert recommended a clean install every couple of years or so.
