I'm dogsitting for my stepsister this weekend. He's a really sweet dog and not too hyper, he's housebroken and he doesn't bother the cats or anything..but he's REALLY homesick. all he does is stare at me and cry for a while then go to the window and look for her..she won't be back until tomorrow evening.

Would it be awful of me to give him a benadryl so he'll just sleep? benadryl is safe for dogs (and cats), so I know it won't hurt him.

Poor thing. How sad. Is he bothering you? Or do you want him to give him the benadryl because you think he needs the sleep?

he's not bothering me, I just thought he could use a nap so he wouldn't be so upset

I think he will sleep if he gets sleepy enough. But I know it is hard to watch a dog be upset when you can't explain to him that she will be home soon.

benadryl doesn't do anything for me relaxing-wise. the dog isn't bothering me at all, he's just upset. he's such a sweetie.

Schnauzers are notorious for this. They are completely attached to their owners and especially daily routine - typical German dog. If you had an inkling as to what this dog's life is like at your Stepsister's...routine, sleeping habits, potty breaks, walks...you could replicate this routine and the dog will eventually become comfortable with you. However, it seems you don't have enough time for that so you can do the best you can. Two real long brisk walks today will tire it out and make it hungry, especially if you can let it off lead to run and explore somewhere. That might be better than trying to eliminate it's runny nose and watery eyes! Good luck.

i'm gonna have to leave him in his crate here in a little while..i hate to do that, but i'm leaving the house. I can't leave him out because I'm afraid my cat would attack him.
