I was kind of disappointed by 2007. Well, disappointed by bands I already like.

If you mean mainstream... Alter Bridge's "Blackbird" kicks arse.

I'm not big on indie stuff, pop or punk, so I don't know any others I've really enjoyed this year.

Had to fire up iTunes to see what I've got from this year that I really like...

1. Battles - Mirrored

"This is not just an album that can be appreciated by fans of the avant-garde, pop and rock alike but a genuine **** you to the people claiming modern music has nowhere left to go."
--Playlouder

2. Iron & Wine - The Shepherd's Dog
3. Explosions in the Sky - All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone (Limited Edition)
4. The Rounders - Wish I Had You (Yay OKC!)
5. Band of Horses - Cease to Begin

Those are the only ones that have stood out to me, but then again I haven't listened to every new album that has come out. I was incredibly disappointed by The New Pornographers (Challengers) and Interpol (Our Love to Admire). Pelican's new one was good, but not great. Same goes for Feist, The Polyphonic Spree, The Coral, and The Shins. Overall a very "meh" year for returning indie artists. By this time next year I probably will have listened to a bunch of the highly-rated 2007 albums by artists I don't know.

Yeah. It's so different from their earlier stuff, yet still Iron & Wine. They managed to expand their sound and add some diversity while still keeping that I&W feel. I was completely surprised by how good it was.

Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga - Spoon

Our Love To Admire - Interpol

All Of The Sudden I Miss Everyone - Exlosions In The Sky

Boxer - The National

We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank - Modest Mouse

Cease To Begin - Band of Horses

Sound Of Silver - LCD Soundsystem

Wincing The Night Away - The Shins

Icky Thump - The White Stripes

Those were my favorites, anyway.

Meat Puppets - Rise To Your Knees (props to KC) yes, the Meat Puppets

Interpol - Our Love To Admire

White Stripes - Icky Thump

I think Modest Mouse's album was very disappointing tho.

Alter Bridge- Blackbird= best rock/metal album of the year. If you say its just creed with a different singer, you have not really listened to them. Shut your mouth and buy the album.

Maybe we should split up mainstream and indie stuff...

goingoneight
11/22/2007, 01:15 AM
The thing is, while Alter Bridge is on a "mainstream label," "Blackbird" very reminiscent of some of the greats of rock and roll in many ways. A lot of folks think they're just Creed with a new singer, but they've 100% totally reinvented their sound from power ballads and grunge to acoustic sets and wild solos. It's like taking Pearl Jam and making them into Skynnard.

If you're one to try anything on for size, this is the title track... it's really good, but very long, too. (<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/yz_j7nVCJJ0&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/yz_j7nVCJJ0&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>)

f you like to fast forward and figure out quickly what it has to offer... 3:21, YWIA.

I think my favorite is Spoon's Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga.

I REALLY like Blonde Redhead's 23.

I think Interpol's Our Love to Admire gets a really unfair rap. Everyone who knows Interpol compares it to Turn on the Bright Lights, which is a bit unfair. TOTBL is a special album that might be impossible for them to replicate. I think if it had never been released, people would be falling all over themselves to talk about what a fine album OLTA is.

But I will say this: after looking through my library, 2005 and especially 2006 were far better years for my personal music tastes.

Meat Puppets - Rise To Your Knees (props to KC) yes, the Meat Puppets

not presuming that's me KC but possibly KC//: but,

i thought that was a surprisingly good record. and lyrically is pretty funny/clever in that Kirkwood stoner way. pretty good live show last summer (even though i don't believe in that nostalgia stuff :D ). i really don't though, there were some hard moments. at least i didn't pay 300$ to see the Eagles at Pepsi Center. 18 bucks at the Fox in Boulder i can live with.

i'm not the music dog i used to be, so i have no opinion about this year, i'd suggest dl'ing some 13th floor elevators or a nice Buddy Holly collection. or dewey redman or ken vandermark.

the Mouse record was fun for a couple weeks, but when the old stuff came up on shuffle (Fruit that ate itself, beyonces).....you had to say to yo'self.....wow, they used to be REALLY good.

I like Interpol's new album better than TOTBL, but I'm not usually into the mopey ****.

Also, Neon Bible is just a lo-fi version of Sam's Town. Anyone who says they love one and hate the other has ulterior motives (namely, trying to look hip)

just my opinion.

i don't know. if you directed that Baron Von Bull**** spek phrase to me and signed it "Mike" then that's the only way i'm talking to you Andy.....and if so i'd say the ball is in your court as far as "issues".

I still can't believe The New Pornographers only had 2 up-tempo songs on their new album. Their slower songs are still good, but the barnburning power pop gems are what make them so great.

My sister listened to it and thought it was midgets singing. Then she asked me the name of the band and I told her it was Battles, so she asked me, "Why? Because midgets have a lot of battles in their lives?"
