View Full Version : "Orange Power"?

I gather from reading the poke boards (don't judge--I'm fascinated by their thought processes) that they have themselves a challenge/response cheer that goes "Orange! Power!" I've never heard this in person, but am I correct in assuming that it's a blatant ripoff of "Boomer! Sooner!"? Is this a fairly new "tradition" for them? I've never heard of it before.

:stunned: [hairGel]

Curious note about orangepower.com: They have one forum for all sports. You'd think the more popular sports like wrasslin and golf would get their own forums, and then they could stick all the non-revenue sports like football into a single forum.

I think it was started in the 80's maybe, but im not positive.

They've done it at least since the early 1980's, but I don't know (and really don't care) when it started. I think it's smack of the weakest order to call it a ripoff. We were not the first school to do an alternating chant.

yep

it was during that time (late 70s and early 80s) that many schools in the SW were starting the 'alternating side of the stadium cheer' dealio)

But where did they get the idea?

I wasn't aware that some colors had more inherent "power" than others. The color orange doesn't seem to be all that powerful anyway. Orange always struck me as one of the weaker crayons in the box. I never used it much myself.

Where did we get it? Unless you can prove they only ever saw us do it, let it go. There are many more, (actually valid) smack worthy topics.

My first college game ever attended was Tulsa at OSU in 1976 (invited by a chick). It was in place then and at the time, I was extremely impressed with the chant.
I attended my first OU game that same year and there was not an alternating Boomer and Sooner in that game.

Just because you have not ever heard the Orange Power chant and you have heard the Boomer Sooner, doesn't make it a blantant rip off. Matter of fact, it was not ripped off from OU at all.

I attended my first game at Rustoleum in the mid-70s, and they did it then. I was just a kid, but I thought it was lame.

They had two guys sitting together. One had a big, cheap poster board with the word "ORANGE" on it. He would hold it up, and then sit down. When the first guy sat down, his neighbor with a board saying "POWER" would stand up.

In this way, the whole stadium chanted that boring chant in unison.

I remember thinking at the time that those two guys probably made their posters at home and just brought them to the game, and hey, everybody else joined in.

Anything they say, do, or chant is stupid.

Interesting. Maybe we ripped it off from them.

That's why I asked.

yeah, but I can't recall if that's an alternating sides thing. seems like it is.

i'm sure lots of schools' crowds do an alternating sides thing.

This in no way takes away from the complete gheyitude of LosuR.

I like to ask them what it means... you usually get the whole "well... you know... it's just like a chant... or... something. Why do you guys yell Boomer Sooner?"

It's just funny to catch them in that puzzling state before explaining the Boomer Sooner chant's origin. :D That 'deer-in-the-headlights,' stunned aggy state.

Nope, as I remember, it was a full house. of course, the "swooners" were in town.

You know the ags can fill their football "palace" for their one game season, national champ-ee-onsheep and Aggie Superbowl all rolled into one.
