If someone where so inclined, could they enlist in the Navy and be a cook or is this a job they have contracted out?

All Navy cooks are actually CIA operatives undercover.

I was in DC this week and it was just a question that popped into my mind as I was walking around. As much as the military has contracted out positions and work, I was curious if the Navy's cooks were still enlisted or contracted out to someone like KBR.

it's contracted out on bases, but not on ships (unless things have changed).

Yes they are. I didn't realize there were actually people in this world that were that dumb until I got to my ship. Seriously, it was even hard to carry on a normal conversation with some of them.

Oh, and one of the cooks, an MS1 IIRC, got busted for ****ing a big mound of dough while he made bread.

Their official title: Mess Management Specialist

Kinda says it all right there.

They caught one banging a chicken on one of the offshore oil rigs. Everybody was laughing at him until he asked " How'd y'all like that ham yesterday?"

I think you have to be a Filipino.

I'm apologize sincerely to all natives and residents of the Phillipine Islands. I'm slapping my face with one hand as I type with the other. :(

About the only thing I ever thought funny about cooks in the Navy is that their rate is called Mess Management Specialist. I spent 12 years in the Navy as a Data Systems Tech, with 9 total at sea on three ships (DD-981, CG-23 and CGN-9) and I agree totally with critical phil that the majority of the MS's I encountered were not too bright. Every once in a while there would a diamond in the rough who was really serious about getting into the hotel or restaurant business after the Navy. The rest were Filipinos who used the MS rate both as a steppingstone to U.S. citizenship and a better life. Now most of the Filipino cooks were pretty clever and were hard workers so they usually ended up being barracks Petty officers on shore duty if they couldn't catch a tour as a Mess Hall PO when they rotated out. The typical cruiser or destroyer would have anywhere from 5-8 MS's stationed onboard and they would prepare three squares a day (and a fourth meal consisting of leftovers, that was served to the midwatch crews (midrats). They also had E-3 and below enlisted assigned to them for 90 days periods and these were drawn from the various divisions on the ship that had non Petty officers assigned, usually such as Engineering, Deck and Operations. The cooks also managed separate preparation and serving areas for the Chief Petty Officers mess and the Wardroom (officer mess). Overall, there would be about 20-25 people working in the galley/mess areas around the ship to serve anywhere from 250-500 sailors. On carriers and other large ships, the number of messes and cooks would be exponentially larger. Cooks typically serve 4-5 year tours of duty at sea, followed by 2-3 years on shore duty. Hope this helps.
