Interesting read, but totally irrelevant since the AP poll isn't used in the BCS calculations anymore.

The AP was only used for 1 season in the BCS, am I right?

AP was used from 1998 through 2004.

damn; I thought the BCS used the AP for 1 year then the AP did not like it so they wanted themselves removed from it.

no, they wanted themselves to be removed after the "Oklahoma over Auburn" fiasco that gave them enough material to justify their existence.

This is partially true. The AP first complained about OU getting in over USC in 2003, and then they proceeded to vote USC as the make-believe champ. Then they complained about OU getting in over Auburn because Auburn is in the SEC, and as we all know, the SEC is way better than the Big 12 . This season is also only the first year that they've been removed from the formula.

Personally, I don't understand why they're making such a big deal about the BCS. The BCS formula was completely changed to accommodate their whining after the 2003 season, and they got exactly what they wanted...USC in the championship in 2004. In fact, if I remember correctly, I think that under the previous formula, USC would have been left out again in 2004, based on strength of schedule or some other factor like that.

I guess the final straw for the AP was that an undefeated Ohio State and a 1-loss Florida got into the BCSC game over the totally awesome 2-loss USC squad?

actually, the AP pretty much bent the BCS over and forced the changes every year from 1998 through 2006. But yet, AP voters will say that they didn't have any conflict of interest in forcing changes for a system they allegedly wanted no part of.
