NORMAN -- Oklahoma defensive end Auston English is questionable for Saturday's game at Texas Tech after undergoing what the Sooners deemed "minor" surgery to stabilize his broken right foot Wednesday.

"They slid a real thin rod that goes up inside it," coach Bob Stoops said in reference to the bone English fractured Nov. 3 against Texas A&M. "It's one of those comfort things. It's literally day to day on how he feels. It sounds like it means he's done for the year, but that's not the case."

English, who leads the Sooners with nine sacks and whose absence was felt last week against Baylor, practiced Monday and Tuesday before undergoing the procedure early Wednesday morning.

"The biggest thing for Auston is comfort," defensive ends coach Chris Wilson said. "If his comfort level is good he can play Saturday. What the rod does is stabilize it where he
doesn't feel it moving around. Instead of putting a brace on it, we put a (rod) in it.

"He's a tough kid, but we're going to be smart," Wilson said. "He's smart enough to know where he is, if he can compete at his level."

Even for me, that sounds like he likely wouldn't play on Saturday. But I'm no orthopedist.....

I can't imagine someone playing football on a leg they just had surgery on 3 days earlier.

That's straight up whack, yo. I can't believe how things have changed. Sounds like they just taped his ankle or something.

Isn't there a possibility of the rod getting knocked loose?

That doesn't make sense. This is what Stoops said at Tuesday's presser,

On if Auston English will play this week after his injury suffered vs. Texas A&M:
“Yes, he practiced yesterday and took at least 50 percent of the snaps on defense and felt good. Yes, he’ll play.”

Obviously Auston felt less good after Tuesday's practice.

I don't think its as bad as we think. Minor surgery doesn't mean that they cut him open completely. It just means that they just gave him a little cut and placed the rod. Its like a vasectamy (or however you spell it) in and out and you can continue with your regular life. However he is a football player so it will be tough.

I think the biggest problem with him playing will be that this game is played on turf. If it was on grass, I think the pressure on his leg would be much less and he might be able to be in there for a portion of the plays. My guess is that he might play a few key plays.

Hmmmn. Week of game surgery + steel rod = azz on the sidelines come Saturday.

Not good news at all for him or the OU fan base as far as him playing against Taco Tech.

I heard the use of the term "presser" did it.;)

If I were betting I would say he isn't playing Sat. I wouldn't be shocked if he did though.

I'm no doctor but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night, so my question is, why didn't they do the rod thingy last week during our "off" week against Baylor.

Again, I was told the injury was worsened in practice. Which is why they didnt put the rod in when it first happened.

Maybe OU has a "spare the rod" policy?

OSU apparently doesn't....

I don't think English will play at all against Tech, Stoops just saying that in hopes to give tech more to work on.

If English doesn't play he needs to learn how to buck it up and deal wit some pain, lol. I do not want him to get injured again but another player comes to my mind when I think broken leg and defense. :-)

Anyone remember this guy

i haven't had one but its an out-patient procedure. I'm no doctor myself but i think English might play some but not a whole lot.

To throw Tech off, Stoops should have said that English' injury last week required a vasectomy.

His playing status would then be night-to-night.

I'm no doctor myself but i think English might play some but not a whole lot.Me too. I think he'll play the first half of every play in the first half. Then if we need him in the second half, he'll play the last half of each play in the last quarter. We will have to guard against having too many men on the field, though.

I'm basically making stuff up here, but I think he'll try to play. He broke his fibula, right? The fib bears negligible weight, so, like Stoops said, the rod was probably placed to stabilize the bone for comfort as opposed to healing- keep it from moving and causing more pain and inflammation during activity. Isolated fib fractures usually heal up pretty well regardless of what you do to them; they may look a little funny for awhile but no long term deficit.

Honestly, I appreciate Autson's contribution to the team so far this year... but I hope he doesn't play if he had any kind of surgery. I know first hand how messed up you can get if you re-injure too soon.

Crucifax Autumn

I think he'll play...right choice or wrong, he'll play.

But either way, we destroy their line and get a record sack total and 7 interceptions!

Ummm.... ...Ow?

No way this young man would play if it were my team. He's still got rest of career and life to think about. I know it will be much better for us with him on the field. I just don't it will be better for him or us if an injury that he can recover from becomes something much worse.

Ultimately the decision will be made by Auston and the doctors.
