You guys are smoking something if you think "Rapture" isn't a crappy video. DH is horrible at rapping, and that video is just.............strange. :)
And, I liked it 25 years ago, looking back, it's bad.

It was made over 25 years ago. I don't think there was a well made video until Duran Duran came around and decided to sink some change into the budget.
Here's an idea, show me a great video that is pre-1982 that is not Duran Duran's - Girls on Film. Almost everything out back then was picked up from some Solid Gold Broadcast.

sure it's bad Doc, but at least it had Debbie Harry and *some* artistic quality, as cheesy as it was! The song was okay too. Great thread btw.

It's worrisome to know JM liked that a-Ha video and sooneron admitted to "Many a time I have done the dexy dance. Drunken dexy dance."

I guess you don't appreciate the fact that the a ha vid was as groundbreaking as it was. I could care less about the song, but the video is considered a classic.
It's ok, some people are creative and they think outside the box, some, just don't.

I believe the Take On Me video was considered to be artistically groundbreaking - one of the top 100 videos. In my opinion the song itself is rather ordinary, though.

on the other hand, Come on Eileen is a dippy video but a decent song.

I believe the Take On Me video was considered to be artistically groundbreaking -

by comic-book collectors, maybe?? ;)

A little too cute for my blood! I can appreciate what the creator was trying to do but calling that thing groundbreaking......someone was searching for filler in their "100 best" list. Both those songs and their respective videos made me cringe - just my opinion. It's all subjective.

the Squier vid posted by JM gets a perfect 10 for cringe-factor from me. It's funny how your mind blocks out certain things to, you know, protect you

by 'great' are you talking about concept, or just plain cinematography?

They played that stupid song so many times over back in 2003 that I became enraged and wanted to throw a hand grenade into the radio station. That was when I was working 15-18 hours a day and was pretty much pi.ssed off about everything.

Ashes to Ashes is one of those videos where you don't turn away, but it is painful to watch as far the post production guy trying to "push the envelope" effects speaking. It was trying way too hard to be art.

Partial Qualifier
11/14/2007, 08:08 AM
Ashes to Ashes was a huge push of the envelope, conceptually speaking.

High-quality cinema and post-production work in music videos wasn't manstream until a few years later when Michael Jackson, Duran Duran, and everybody else suddenly had access to the same level of production previously enjoyed only by movie studios. And it wasn't an artistic breakthrough; it was a technology breakthrough.

To me... and again, this is highly subjective and you're entitled to your own opinion.. the concept is the art. I can appreciate your viewpoints and your aHa's and your Duran Durans too.... well, maybe not the aHa's............. ;)

sooneron
11/14/2007, 10:23 AM
Agree on the Ashes to Ashes concept, but the implementation was NG.

My issue is that it's not just the concept that is the art. It's the total package.

BAD was any video of Milli Vanilli..........

The a-Ha video "Take On Me" was the first one done using the Rotoscope technique for a music video, it had been used in the Heavy metal movie and other animated features. "The Sun Always Shines On TV" was a better song on that same album.
