I used to be on the Marines website back in the day. I was playing football, and we had won a tournament on a Navy base.

I'm always conflicted on Veterans Day. I know the correct answer is to say thank you and move on but in reality I don't take compliments well and I feel the need to explain that I was in the Nat'l Guard and never served in combat.

I have never felt that this day was for me. I know in feeling that way I may be discounting the service that other Guardsmen and women have done for our country but I don't mean to.

I didn't show up to every drill weekend. I didn't always show up on time. I sometimes showed up hungover as all get out. I was a fairly ****ty soldier. I never missed a field drill and was good at my job:
http://media01.cgchannel.com/images/gallery/3732/5/fullimg.jpg

I was in 6 years, 11 months and 9 days. The last APFT for record I passed was to graduate AIT. I passed a few on paper over bacon and eggs at a diner in Chickasha with my NCOIC filling out my score card as we ate.

I did show up and stand the line with a torn ACL when my unit was activated with plans to go to Iraq and I missed the last half of my last semester at OU.

Anyhoo, this next pull off the Crown Royal bottle is for those of you that served your country in a great way.

I also named a duece and a half 'Donkey Punch'. It may still be rolling around Lawton with that name in 8" stenciled letters on the back.

Phil Loadholt never gets in the endzone, but that doesn't mean he didn't contribute to the win.

OK that's corny but it's all I got. 1TC you volunteered, and did the job, it's your day

i'd have to dig up in the attic to find a pic of me in uniform.

but i looked the same then as i do now. well, except i've gained about eleventy jillion pounds. and i had a gruntbob squarehead hair cut back then. and i used to wear those sweetass UDT shorts with my peter hanging out to work almost every day.

i still wear shorts with my peter hanging out, but rarely to work.

3 observations....

sweet jeeebus jk......did you never leave a desk in your early days? i was trying to figure out why you are a spec4 in that pic with just an AIT ribbon..... i see you did fine after that making chief ;) .....what is the CID MOS? i was always scared you bastards were hiding around corners "back in the day". it was either CID or delta force i can't remember ;)

what does your son's MOS? i see 4 of them with rock eater hair styles and then elvis with the goatee.....

nice last name :) any relation to the lounge?

BTW, here were my three jobs

first: 19 Kilo: 72 tons of asss kicking coming at ya.. sorry about the size. this happens to be one of the tanks in my unit in germany. if i can't use my tank, i want to at least use one from my unit.

http://www.tonyrogers.com/images/weapons/m1a1_large2.jpg

second job: 11Xray : im assuming, no explanation needed. 1 and done......btw the reserves suck for this MOS lol....

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/02/Drill_sergeant_screams.jpg/150px-Drill_sergeant_screams.jpg

thrid job: 13 Foxtrot: if you don't like walking, pooping in the woods and sleeping on the ground......this isn't for you....no pictures cuz it would be some dude standing there all grungy no bath in days with 100 lbs wortha sheite on his back and his teeth lookin like mack brown because he hasn't brushed em in days....

I kinda liked it at times....you can't beat a nice forced march in the forest at 2 am for an attack at 5 am in the pitched dark through any and all types of terrain while the rest of the entire oklahoma national guard sleeps all nice and snug in their fart sacks listening to their walkmans (no such animal as ipods yet)

funny, true story. one drill, we went to camp gruber to call for fire and the commander of the nebraska national guard wanted to challenge us to a battle royal of sorts. best 2 of three wins. we knew about this before we left the city and the commanders hummer was missing when we got to the armory. We were told it would meet us out there. anyway, we go out and kick the shiit out of the nebraska guard unit 2 zip..... we're all standing around with the corn boys talking about next weeks tilt with neb and OU.....the commanders hummer comes screaming into the AO with 1k worth of stereo equipment blaring boomer sooner. 2 eighteen inch subwoofers sound damn good behind that song by the way.......o yeh we lost that game the following weekend 70 something to 21. i had a couple of beers. i think i threw up. the end.

that E4 pic was taken at my first unit in germany - 187th Personnel Service company - all desk time (we did go to the field believe it or not) - i got promoted to E4 rather quickly - the ribbons came later (with a few more promotions). I was an E6(P) the day I pinned WO1

i got most of those ribbons before i went Warrant Officer, but the CID mos for a Chief Warrant Officer is 311A

i think its 95D for enlisted agents

jk2 is infantry - the pointy tip of the spear

and yes, related to the lounge, albeit distantly

Do not get worked-up about redeployment rumors. They are as old as warfare itself, and a rarely accurate.

I joined so I could live in Germany. My recruiter says "Son, with your MOS and a 4 year enlistment you won't be able to stay OUT of Germany. So I spent 4 years at Ft Bliss, El Paso Texas. Basic to ETS.

I taught data flow on an old analog computer for a surface to air missile system to NATO troops. Easiest duty in the history of easy duty.

So, I was googling myself one night and (since I'm named after my grandfather, who was a paratrooper in WWII) I came across a reference to him. Oddly enough, it is the only reference to him regarding the war that I have come across.

It's in an article about, of all things, the changing attitude in Germany toward German women that married American GIs. (You guessed it, my grandmother's German-born.)

Anyway, they quote some German newspapers from the time period, and there are several articles referring to my granddad as "The Blockade-Runner of Love."

Are you done giggling yet? ;)

Anyway, I consulted Grandma and that was indeed him (the name's not that common in the US) - he apparently had a habit of sneaking into blockaded areas of Berlin to see girls. Every time the MPs threw him on trucks out of Berlin, and he kept winding up back there. (And when I say threw, I mean it: Granddad wouldn't have gone quietly.)

So anyway, there's a story about GHP's granddad in Germany after WWII. :D
