SHould be a goodie! Will be fun to see Langhorne vs. Paris, but if the Sooners can't control the TO's, could be TROUBLE.

Hope Vining goes off in 3 pt land. We'll need it!

Stacey and Sherri look good, but that's about it right now.

Win or lose, don't make too much of this and the game against Tennessee. I'm glad these are being played at the beginning of the year so that the coaching staff can see what we need to work on to play with the athletic teams at the top of the pecking order come March.

Hopefully they'll make some adjustments at half and not get embarrassed.

Newbomb Turk
11/11/2007, 06:07 PM
that's the good thing about basketball. You don't have to get too upset about losing a game - especially non-conference.

Ash
11/11/2007, 06:09 PM
Don't make much of it? Not get embarrassed?

This game is exposing the fact that this team is nowhere near their top ten ranking, maybe not even top 25 at this point.

There's too much talent and experience on this team to be looking this bad. I hope they get it straightened out at half time and come back to win this game.

It's November and there's 30 some odd games and 6 months left in the season. No reason at all to make too much out of it.

Do you really think that OU's a top 5 team? Let's get real here. We simply don't have the athletes that the top tier teams have. Hasn't the last couple of years made that quite evident?

Ash
11/11/2007, 06:15 PM
The core of this team has played together and been through the battles before. The communication and court awareness should be there.

Right now, they're looking like it. In the first half, they didn't.

It's apparent that if a team has the size to take care of Courtney, our inexperience gets exposed.

We are young and it's a pretty tough stage for players that are so young to start off on ESPN on national TV with a ranked opponent.

It is good to see Ashley making her shots, she looks a lot more confident from last season. Roethlisberger has made a couple of outstanding passes. I think when your PG quarterback is young, it shows more than any other position. I really think D Robinson will become the starting PG just because we need her slashing abilities, but for now, freshmen do what freshmen do: they foul and don't play defense very well.

I've never seen OU come out of the gates playing very strong at this time of the year, that doesn't seem to have changed.......

aw gawd, next butt stomping coming up Thursday nite

The core of our team is the Paris sisters. They're 2 years and one game into their college career. They have yet to beat a top tier program in those two years.

It's not enough to just be in the battle, you've got to figure out what it's going to take to win them. We have nobody on the roster who's experienced that yet.

I'm not bashing here, just stating the obvious.

And you're right on. The youth of OU is going to be their achilles heel; I firmly believe that...they have so little rhythm it worries me.

Now, having said that, I think the schedule they play with have good/bad results.
a) I think we get killed in a couple of games, but
b) the experience and lessons learned from such stout competition will only pay off big come conference play.

We have too little real game experience and we're being exposed as a result.

I don't think anybody disputes that we have talent. What we don't have is a top 5 filled with all out athleticism that can run up and down the floor. The top tier teams have had those types of players for a few years now.

We're also very, very young man. It's a long season and they'll get better.

Robinson just gave a perfect example of what I'm talking about.

She gets the ball after a turnover and is 1x1 with a Maryland guard and backs out instead of taking it to the hole. Take it to the paint and see if you can get a foul called. If not, at least get an easy bucket.

There are more ways to win in basketball than running up and down the floor. Not every team plays that style, that doesn't mean you can't be successful. It's the team's job to impose their pace on the game.

We have one of the best PGs in the game, even if she is young.

Yes, the team is young overall. And yes, there's time to improve.

But what I've seen in this game is not great effort but lack of talent. It's not simply inexperience. It was a complete lack of execution of some of the fundamental aspects of the game - even by players who have experience at the D1 level.

Like you, I'm not trying to bash - I'm just stating what's obvious.

They have played better in the second half. But this game has been disappointing. Throw out the rankings, etc. Just looking at fundamental basketball, this game has been disappointing.

Fully understand that. How do you define success. If it's NC's, then you're going to be disappointed year in and year out. You have to be able to run to win a NC nowadays.

LOL. No, I'm not one of those fans that thinks a NC is the only measure of success.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree about what you need to be a successful team. You don't have to run the women's equivalent of BillyBall to win a national championship. That's never been the case and it still isn't.

But, anyway, here's to a better rest of the season and continued improvement. Hope the women have great success.

BoomerGirl34

They will improve as the season progresses. Get the young girls some more experience under the most harsh of conditions (Tenn. ASU, etc) and they will grow and mature.

I do think we are successful. I just don't think we're top tier yet. We're close, just not quite there yet.

And no, I'm not talking Billy Ball runnin and gunnin. IMO, being able to run starts on the defensive end. You've got to have athletic players with quick feet and hands that cause havoc. Take the TO and drive the basket. That's not generally the first look for our gals when we get against the top tier teams.

They made it a respectable score in the end and hopefully learned a few things about themselves. That's all I'm really looking for at the beginning of the season.
