How is it possible they can potentially rake in a class like this? What on Earth do these recruits see in Notre Dame? Weekly tv coverage? Of what, an ***-whuppin'?

Feel free to move it to the recruiting boards.

Immediate playing time available for one of the premier football universities in the nation and constant exposure under the tutelage of a coach with an NFL pedigree sounds pretty enticing.

But then again, I root for ND.

And if it was over on the recruiting board, only like 7 of us would see it.

Well, at least we have the positives here: Weiss will coach them into sucking!

Why? How could you do this? If defies all concepts of human decency to root for ND.

I grew up rooting them since my dad's entire family graduated from there and are Irish-Catholics.

ND will stil suck and Weiss will be there another 2 years and then they will finally see a 7-5 record! Or they could suck for another decade I don't care! I hate ND!

For the typical player being recruited, Notre Dame last won a bowl game when he was six. Since most kids' memories of games kick in around then, many of these recruits will not be able to remember a single time that Notre Dame won a bowl game. Would he remember a Top Ten finish?

NFL pedigree? Wouldn't a 1-8 season take the shine off such a pedigree? How much in awe can you really be of a coach whose team is so horrible?

Weis is the most overrated coach in history.

Hell, the Patriots got BETTER when he left!!

If they fired Ty Willingham after his third year for having only 6 wins, and they don't fire Weiss for maybe only having 1-2 wins in his third year, then something is really, really wrong with ND.

The odd thing is, Ty wasn't getting the solid recruits that the boosters felt that he should have been getting. Weis is getting them. If they are sub .500 next year, I think he may be gone, but not after this year.

if I were recruiting against ND, I would show them the following picture and ask if they want to get bent over like Mr Clausen:

i don't support notre dame but i can understand kids wanting to go there. they suck mainly because they don't have any talent. all it takes is for a group of big time recruits to get together and agree to go there to change the culture of losing.

So, basically the thought process is that OU got 5 guys on the list that never really lived up to their expectations and that ND got 4.

I don't think they did too bad. Quinn Abiamiri, Samardzija, and Zbikowski were standouts for them.

I personally think that the ND alums were looking for an excuse to kick out Ty (so they could get Urban Meyer), and it backfired. The NFL-ites thought the hiring of the fat man was a godsend for ND, because we all know that NFL coaches are infinitely smarter than their college counterparts. Weiss was going to put his big brain to use and punish the inferior college coaches for even thinking they belong in the same stratosphere.

I don't hate ND. In fact, I've liked every ND fan I've met, and I was treated very well there when I traveled to their stadium. I do, however, hope that Weiss falls on his fat face to punish those that thought it was right to axe Ty Willingham on a whim.

Winning bowl games has no effect on a kids recruiting. And the last time they finished top-10 was 2005 so unless these kids all have the memory span of gold fish, I bet they remember.

ND is the youngest team in the nation. Their offense is similar to ours in 2005, but they don't have AD or the solid defense to rely on.

No one is happy with Weis this year but it was suppose to be a very bad year. Not this bad and if Weis doesn't dramatically turn it around next year, more people will be calling for his head.

You guys need to listen to Pat Jones talk about recruiting services. He gives a pretty good understanding of how those things work. How a guy can be a 4 or 5 star going to play in a certain place and a 2 star if he commits somewhere else. A lot of it has to do with the coach. If a coach is recruiting a player and he gives rivals their phone number and all the information about the player, that coach is in with Rivals. They say thats the reason some of the Callahan and Franchione recruiting classes were rated high. Callahan has actually been a speaker at some Rivals functions. Well what do you think they are gonna do?

My question has always been how do you take thousands of players from around the country and rate them? And how do you rank them in a top 100 or 150? Its impossible to formulate that process without including 98 percent BS in the formula

This is absolutely true. I think much more in the case of ND. I think ND could pick just about any high school senior and give him a scholarship and he will be rated as a 3-star. If the recruiting rankings for the last several years were remotely correct and Weis could coach at all ND would be 7-2 right now.

So their next class will be rated in the top 5, maybe #1 and they will be massively overrated as well.

No body drops 2-3 stars.

Coaches don't give a flying flip what the recruiting services rank kids. They'd prefer they stay under the radar so no body else hops on. They aren't calling up Scout or Rivals and giving detailed analysis of these guys.

And wouldn't it stand to reason that if a kid such as Juaquin Iglesis (who was off the radar and immediately jumped to a 3* if a program of ou's caliber thought they were worthy of a scholarship? It's not like Oklahoma, USC, Florida, etc are recruiting the leftovers.

People such as myself have done research and if you are a 4-5* recruit, you're much more likely to be drafted because you're on average, a more talented prospect. This isn't fool proof but as more money and time is being invested into recruiting services, the more accurate they're becoming.

They'll never be close to 100% but neither are college coaches. Recruiting for the most part is a guessing game.

Those who say that recruiting services add stars after a kid commits there are speaking some truth. A QB that notre dame recruited this year was a 4-star on Rivals, committed to ND, and Rivals made him a 5-star guy a week later.

I agree, but it happens as soon as one or more of the top schools in the country (in terms of coach, tradition, ranking, etc.) offers him.

For example, let's say that you work for Rivals.com, and you don't have XX recruit ranked yet (or maybe he has 1-2 'stars'). What is your first thought if USC, OU, Florida, tOSU, Texas, Miami, and ND all offer the kid? After the 'Oh ****!', your next reaction is to immediately raise that kid's ranking. You'll find, fairly consistently, that the '4-star' and '5-star' (and to some degree '3-star') recruits are relatively highly recruited. In other words, they have offers from some top-tier schools. If you don't have anything objective to go off of (like hardline stats from a combine event), you go with the subjective opinions of recruiters.

You can only really rank a recruit based on:

1. Athleticism (from a combine-like event)
2. Performance (his highschool career)
3. Opinion (from fellow nerd analysts and college coaches, usually based on film and visits to games)

Crist was a 4-star prospect as a junior and had to decide between ND, USC, and LSU. That sounds like a great offer list to me. Not to mention that this is a pretty weak QB class this year.

But was the jump really warranted by the talent the recruting services saw in Dayne Crist? ND, USC, and LSU would still offer him whether he was a 4* or 5*. You have also said that it is a weak overall class for QBs. Does the fact that he is very good at a weak position merit him earning an extra star?

David King, who is a verbal to OU, is a good example of a kid jumping after giving us a verbal. He started out fairly low (2 or 3 stars) partly because he was hurt part of the time last year. What is he now: yep, he's got himself 4 stars. No doubt part of that is that he's healthy and playing well this year, but how much is it the fact that OU wants him and if OU wants him then he must be really good?

i hate to break it to you, but coaches use recruiting services a heck of a lot more than you think. most will admit that they use them to get names, as is the case with venables getting rufus alexander's name from jeremy crabtree very late in the game. this, of course, doesn't prove that they use the stars, but with the way they tout them when they talk about their class, you would think it has at least a little sway. if bob stoops landed a recruiting class of all 3 stars, he'd be crucified by our fanbase.

i was doing a statistical project on the rankings vs. how they panned out before i got bored with it. in general, except for QB, if a guy was in the top 3 he had a pretty good chance of panning out (something like 40%). if he was considered to have 'freakish ability' at his position there was a crazy good chance he would pan out and get drafted (think peterson, bush, tommie harris, etc). WR was the most accurate with DE and QB being the least. at QB, there was a better chance of a pan out from 5-10 than 1-4. ex. arm strength tended to help QBs, but it hurt them from panning out because they could sign for millions in baseball (joe mauer, tuiasosopo, etc).

The point isn't that Crist isn't a good QB, he may be. The point is that he "probably" doesn't get the bump IMO if he commits to LSU, Florida, OU, maybe even USC. The moment ND gets him though he is a 5-star. Do that with a number of 3-4 star guys and you have an overrated class, as shown by the performance 3-4 years later on the field.

Thats why those top 100s and top 150s are a lot of bs. If recruiting is a guessing game, those lists are guessing games.

As far as the stars, Jones has given more than one account of a player dropping more than 1 star because of a switch in the commitment.

I didn't say they don't use them, I said they don't care about their rankings. I know for a fact that Hale and Rivals give those guys free logins and that if they get bored, they'll go through some of the recruiting highlights.

Not this case, you guys missed the point where he was ranked a 4-star as a junior. More film, more combine, more reports poured in and he got the final bump.

I'm not denying certain kids get their ranking bumped up because whoever they pledge to. Lemming has admitted that he greatly overrated last year's ND class and other classes before. It's part of their business model.

Farrell, Boston College and the main North Eastern Rivals guy, is guilty of this as well.

I think its called racism.

Leroy Lizard
11/10/2007, 04:20 PM
I don't think it's racism. They wouldn't have hired Ty in the first place.

More likely, they probably feel that firing Weis right now would create a perpetual cycle of hiring and firing coaches. You simply cannot keep trying one coach after another. Also, Weis is a Notre Dame man, just like Boo Blake was a Sooner. We gave Howie one year, but four years for Blake, despite the fact that Howie was probably the better coach. You want to give your own more chances than outsiders.

They will give Weis another year, then unload him if things don't improve.
