I'd say the Big 8/XII has done very well contending for greatness.

1983- Nebraska goes for win but loses to Miami for the NC
1983- Texas loses to UGA by 1 in the Cotton to kiss the NC away
1985- Thanks to Tenn win over Miami, OU defeats PSU for the NC
1987- Oklahoma loses a close battle to Miami for the NC
1989- Colorado's loses NC claim by loss in the Orange to ND
1990- Colorado gets revenge by defeating ND and winning the AP crown
1992- Texas A&M 12-1 (lone loss to Irish)
1993- Nebraska loses to FSU for the title
1994- Texas A&M experiences probation but finishes 10-0-1
1994- Colorado, led by Rashaan Salaam, goes 11-1 with lone loss to Neb.
1994- Nebraska wins national title
1995- The greatest CFB team of all time, NU, repeats as national champs
1997- Nice way to go out for Osborne; 3rd national crown in 4 years
2000- Oklahoma wins with one of the greatest defenses ever (13-0)
2001- Colorado was .06 off from being a 2 loss team in the NC game
2001- Nebraska's loss to CU wasn't enough to keep them from the NC game
2003- Despite the ending, one of the best ever to not win it- OU
2004- Stop crying AU; we deserved to be there cuz our sos was better
2004- Texas goes 11-1, wins Rose, only loss was to the Good Guys
2005- Hard to argue with this Texas team as one of the best NC teams ever

1984, OU just had to beat Udub by 2 TD's and the pollsters claimed they would jump OU over BYU for the '84 NC. We went ahead and lost.

I thought about 1984 as well but wasn't sure because of the 9-1-1 record prior to the loss to Washington. I was only 2 at the time but; if Oklahoma had defeated Washington, OU would have been the national champ? Washington won but they didn't get the crown. I guess Florida would have been the national champ had they not had to vacate their SEC crown due to a violation. There had to be some reason for BYU to have won the title other than going undefeated.
