In the 1990's, it was 'pro-active'

"We need to be pro-active in the community..blah blah bull****."

Now it is 'synergy'

WTF does that sh*t mean?

eta- they even have a plural form for it: synergies.

Say wha????????

I can go you one better. Our new VP of Marketing has introduced...

Integrating Synergies across the Enterprise!

I swear I don't know if he is talking about Star Trek or what!:texan:

Geez, they are thinking outside the box of another paradigm in which each unit is a high performing organization. Combine that with total quality management, you can then expound your cross enterprise knowledge management to increase corporate highpoints.

Any questions?

Our new corporate masters introduced this word to us in our first meeting. Now, you have to realize that 3/4 of the room are truck drivers, the remaining are batch managers and loader operators. Rough bunch, overly-independent and under-educated. Talk about a blank stare and a big ol' collective "wtf did he just say?"

I still don't know what that word means.

Our new VP of Mktg gave this rambling speech last week at our Sales Meeting and the Sales guys were asking me the next day:

"Is this the best we could do?"

"Guardrails" came and went. That one hardly stuck at all.

I still hear "silos" bandied about. Wanna p*ss someone off? Accuse them of building silos.

"Lack of urgency" and "clusterf*ck" are still my favorites.

Don't you know? The way to level the silos is to move to Enterpise Integration....;)

Just blast some George Carlin for them. No one knows language better than George. He has spent many an hour on stage chewing the A$$ out of "soft", "euphemistic" language because the purpose of this kind of language is to conceal true meanings and alter the emotional impact of real words.

I do like to say, "keep yer head on a swivel" because it reminds me of playing football. I don't think that's trendy corporate language at all.

If I worked in an office, I would speak only in monosyllabic grunts.

Half of effective middle management is knowing how to use big words that you don't even understand.

I believe it was Dilbert and it goes something like this....

"Your colossal ineptitude as a Leader has left us listless and unmotivated."

Synergy is the energy created by the synthesis of two ideas. I believe it comes from dialectical materialism, which can give you a chuckle thinking about all of these hardcore corporate guys using Marxist-type language.

I hate myself for knowing that.

"Enterprise-wide", "cross-platform", and "member-centric" all make me die a bit inside every time I utter them.

"Enterprise-wide", "cross-platform"

in practice, i am pretty happy when these two happen

everything should be cross-platform

In usage, synergy means that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

It's about TEAM.

Well, sure. But maybe if we spent more time actually implementing "enterprise-wide" solutions we wouldn't have to talk about them all the time.

And whatever happened to good old words like "universal" or "global?"

"synergy" was pretty late 90's, dot.com bubble stuff.

outside of it's hoky metaphyiscal trappings, for someone like Disney it means vertical integration across media. ESPN radio interviews some doosh in the latest summer crap film as a "sportsfan" which is a plug for the film to the sports audience.

Synergy is used a lot in Non Profit Organizations also. At least the ambitious ones anyway.

Aaaand after 20 seconds of internet research, I find that synergy has been in use since 1660 and as such predates Hegel's DM.

wow.

20 seconds of internet research and you finally get useful ;)

I hope this is a trend.

I'm usually only useful in 20 second spurts. Just ask (insert suitably insulting woman.)

a 20 second spurt is pretty good, i would say. nothing to sneeze at.

Goodness. I think if I sneezed at the same time I might lose spinal fluid.
