I will be spending a night in St. Louis next week. Is there anything I should go out of my way to see or do while there?

The whole Forest Park area is cool

StL Art Museum - in Forest Park - me and my gf had a good time walking around there

Union Station - sort of a mall, but interesting - where the "Dewey Defeats Truman" photo was taken

Arch - duh

Cathedral Basilica - beautiful mosaics and artwork inside the church

There's actually a big bar/music club across the river and south a little bit that's decent - Gravity Kills usually plays a Halloween show over there if you're into industrial rock. Might be next weekend, I haven't looked.

There's also a predominantly Italian neighborhood called "The Hill" where you can get some eats. Lots of places around there.

College kids and hipsters hang out either on the Delmar Loop, or on South Grand St. Both are close to universities, both have a lot of places to eat. The number one place that gets suggested for food around here is Blueberry Hill, a burger joint/live music club on Delmar. Never been, it's really touristy, but the food is supposed to be great. Delmar area also has lots of thrift stores, great comic book store, and used record stores. Also has a great old theater called the Tivoli that shows limited release movies. You also have late night bowling/drinking at Pin-Up Bowl.

Grand St. has a bunch of different ethnic restaurants. Afghan (you can smell the garlic for blocks), thai, vietnamese, italian, and others. Also has the City Diner, which is done over in sci-fi movie posters and retro vinyl love.

Forest Park is great, but it'll be chilly, so outside might not be the best bet. The Central West End area is good for art, books, furniture, antiques, food, and...if you're bringing a lady friend along, the Bissinger's Chocolate Experience is a heck of a way to end a night.

Oh, also the boobie bars in East STL are supposed to be the finest in the Midwest. I know one of the guys who works security down in that area, and he says they're better than Vegas. Don't really have a frame of reference on that for myself.

That's so true. SoonerInTheLou? BoomerLouner? These things must be thought out perfectly. Mostly I'm just lazy.

I hear if you like your money and your life, you shouldn't go cross the river.

I'd say the "Don't Cross the River" thing is a little blown out of proportion. Granted, East Saint Louis isn't the best place, but there are several places on the Missouri side that I'd rather not be. If you stay south of Page, and/or west of Kingshighway, you're probably going to be fine. Also, don't get caught near too many streets named after presidents or states.

the arch is really cool..there's a museum underneath and an IMAX film. The Budweiser brewery is fun...if you have a date or kids with you, Grant's farm is always fun..there's a wildlife preserve and it's where the budweiser horses live..there's also a petting zoo and a beer garden, you get free beer samples. Forest park is beautiful..the art museum, zoo and science center are all down there and all free admission.

Unfortunately, I think they closed down the world's only floating McDonald's :)

Looks like most everything got covered. The only thing I didn't see mentioned yet was Westport near 270 and Page. Lots of good food, clubs, etc. The Pageant Theater on Delmar is a cool place to see live music. Blues Traveler is playing there on Halloween.

http://www.thepageant.com/

When I was living / working up there I developed my own rule for exits not to take off of I-70. Basically, it you're traveling on 70 don't take any exits that are east of Lambert Airport until you reach downtown. After you cross the the mighty Mississip, don't exit for at least 4 miles unless you know exactly where you're going. I actually modified the rule a bit as I became familiar with the area but I think it's probably still a good rule of thumb for newbies to the area.

Be sure to pick up the local entertainment rag (edit - Riverfront Times?) when you hit town, the listings are (or were, anyway) extensive. If you can't find music to suit your taste in St. Louis then you probably don't like music, they've pretty much got it all.

Yeah - I think you are thinking of KC, not St Louis.

I was in St Louis a couple of weeks ago and had a meal at a fantastic Italian place downtown - I'll find the name of it and post it later. One of the best meals I have ever had...

Well, since you're going to be in the KC area, you need to go to Stephenson's Apple Farm restaurant. It's over on the Missouri side but well worth the trip.

All I got to see of St. Louis was strip malls, fast food joints, and traffic. The rest of Missouri was great though.

For the stretch I was on I-70 I did, I spent most of the trip on State/US HWY's and they were short on porn shops.

Apparently, they're more prevalent on I-44 from St. Louis to Springfield. Although I admit I didn't see any on U.S. 71 from Joplin to K.C.

Yes. You should stop there. And bring lots of cash. They are looking for a buyer. And they closed Valentines day of this year. However the orchard is still there. You might catch a squirrel or rabbit and roast it over some apple wood.

Prior to its closure, I had been to Stephenson's on several occasions. All I've got to say is that Applewoods in OKC > Stephenson's by SEVERAL orders of magnitude.

Bottom line: Stephenson's is closed.

Well, crap. I'm sorry to hear that. I'd only eaten there once back in '99 and it was absolutely outstanding on every level.
