I'm taking a class called Writing the Novel this semester. It's the last major requirement (aside from my Capstone) for my professional writing degree. I have to write a 50,000 word (200 page) novel by December 5th.

The assignment is divided up into four 12,500 word (50 page) milestones and the second one was due tonight at midnight.

the day the first milestone was due, I struggled to write 4795 words in one 10-hour marathon... I finished with 43 minutes to spare.

today, I flew through 3000 words in three hours at Starbucks. I finished with 5 hours to spare.

in summary: I am AWESOME.

One composition notebook: $1.00

4 fancy coffees: $16.00

Ingesting enough caffeine to write 3000 words in 3 hrs.: Priceless!

:D

i don't use a composition notebook. I use legal pads (the sheets all get hole-punched and filed in a big manila folder w/ the metal brackets on the top), random bits of paper, and my laptop (early christmas present).

and usually it's tea. I'm not a big fan of coffee. But I am pretty fond of the pumpkin spice latte. ...either way, the number's about right :O

Honestly, you could write a soap opera from the SO. what a cast you could come up with. We got peeps all over the world, rich, poor, libs, conservatives and everything in between. And we all have something in common. The SOONERS>>>>>:D

I think it'd be awesome if your NEXT book really were about podiatry....like a Grey's Anatomy of the feet.

Congrats on your writing. Sounds like you are really in the groove. It's a great feeling when you get comfortable doing a task that was once daunting.

I wrote a master's thesis once upon a time and of course, that's
something totally different, but that's quite a feat!

Hmm, a sci-fi fantasy, Grey's Anatomyish novel about a sooner-loving podiatrist. This has a lot of possibilities. Just think of what the cover graphics would look like!

next time somebody asks that question, I'm just going to say "podiatry"

It's about some young english boy who finds out he's a wizard and goes to a special school and does all kinds of groovy magical things, isn't it? Cause that would be really cool. You'd make gawdzillions.

i don't care about being seen writing in a starbucks. I go there because I write very well there. At home I get distracted.

And it certainly doesn't hurt that there's a cute starbucks guy i can ogle while i'm typing.

How many people are in this class? Can you imagine grading x number of novels per semester? That'd be a lot of reading and stuff!

Oh, and good job. And, I agree on the pumpkin spice thing. I like thier apple cider, too, even though I'm not a coffee house frequenter.

our professor is INSANE. He's had to turn in 3 novels of his own to his publisher since the semester started, plus he's reading all of our stuff.

There are 24 of us, so for each of our deadlines, he has to read 300,000 words. So by the end, he'll have to read 4800 pages worth of novels. And he's actually hoping to get all the way through each of ours twice.

He also teaches a short story class, which would probably be 1150 pages worth of reading, or there about.

the problem is that there are so few distractions at home that I get distracted. So I have to be distracted enough that I can concentrate.
