I say this because for the past 5 days, my family and I have spent our time in the evacuation shelter in a high school on a gym floor with 100 people we do not know. We were mandatory evacuated late Sunday evening. We were only allowed to go home on Thursday afternoon. Luckily our home was not burned, only some wind damage due to the tornado like winds that flew through here on Sunday night/Monday morning. The fire came within 2.8 miles of our home. Thank goodness for those firefighters who stood there on Monday night and held the fire line so our neighborhood's homes were spared. The fire crews were staged on our road so they would be able to save our homes if it came any closer.

To be so insensitive as to say why should people build in these areas, until 4 years ago, no such thing as these huge catastrophic fires had occurred in these areas in San Diego. This time I will say I am glad I don't own the home we currently rent. I can't imagine going home and not having anything, all our belongings and memories gone in an instant. We actually had about 5 hours to evacuate, but there were some people that had the flames on the back of their decks and had to leave in 5 minutes. How do you grab everything so important to you in 5 minutes?

I also want to say, as this was our first time in a Red Cross Evacuation Center, how awesome they are. They provided us a place to sleep, food, blankets and access to tv's for news and a place for us to plug our cell phones and laptop in to. They were great. You really don't understand all they do until you see it in person. They even gave us really nice carriers for our all of our cats.

Anyhow, I just wanted to let people know that it's not all fun and games and that not everyone just deserves to fall off in the ocean out here in So Cal. Yes, I'm not very fond of the place and we're in the process of trying to relocate out of here, but there really are some nice people here.

I use to live in Southern California. San Marcos to be exact. I was there during the 2003 Cedar fire. It was an ordeal and feel your pain. I sold my house because of that event...

Thanks, it was really scary there for a while. Even after we were able to get home, every helicopter or bit of smoke we saw kept us on the edge of our seats. We thought we would sleep well that first night back in our home, but not so much. Last night was much better.

On a more humorous note, I'm certainly glad OU didn't play this weekend. Not sure I could have handled dealing with that too, lol.

A vast majority of the people who have been burnt out were not multimillionaires too stupid not to build on hilltops. I live in a suburban area not much different from, say, Edmond, and WE had to evacuate for three days because the fire was so out of control, driven by sometimes 100 mph winds--hot, dry winds blowing in from the desert. My 50-year-old coworker, whose family is anything but rich, told me her aunt lost her home, which she has lived in since before my co-worker was born.

I had my in-law's to go to, so I wasn't in a shelter, but nonetheless I spent three days watching TV and waiting in fear to see if the fire would reach my neighborhood. It didn't, but a thousand other households weren't so lucky. Someone else said this already on this thread, but essentially saying that these people have only themselves to blame because of where they choose to live makes as much sense as saying that when a tornado hits Oklahoma.
