During the Iowa St. game I was thinking about OUr punt/kickoff return guys and how average they are. We haven't had a decent threat in the return game since Antonio Perkins. I think we need to recruit a gamebreaker in the kick return game.

Just a thought.

Carry on.

Iglesias is a threat to fumble.

But thats probably not what youre talking about.

Its the blocking. Look at the KR every time he fields the ball there are 2 or 3 guys up on him. Does not matter if its a high, low, near or far kick. There are always people on top of him with the exception of Utah State where I think their guys were just not fast.

AD would have been a gamebreaker returning kicks if we chose to use him there. Look at what he has been doing on kick returns in the NFL. I think we have a special teams superstar right now. His name is Demarco. Unfortunately, it is difficult for him to break off a huge return from the sidelines. Maybe they'll give him a shot at it next year.

Isnt DM returning kickoffs? Pretty sure its him and Iglesias back there. I know Colorado kicked away from Demarco every kick.

Now that I think about it, you're right. He did have that return against Tulsa. I guess he just hasn't gotten a chance to field many. We should try one of those reverses on a kickoff sometime where Iglesias hands it off to Demarco. With his speed, I think he could take one of those to the house. I would like to see him on punt returns too. Reggie has just been a little off on those this year.

it seems our punt returners need to learn how to fair catch punts. i was at the game so i dont know how close the cyclones were in reality but they looked really close from the stands to the point where fair catches were needed and werent made. reggie and franks scare me back there because it wasnt just reggie make his usual crazy plays back there

Just imagine the fumble possibilities with that combination. Yeesh.

I think we do have a threat with DM back there, problem is that the other team is always gonna kick it to Iglesias. Am i missing something or could we just not go with 1 guy back there(DM) and force them to kick it to him? As far as punts, I still havent seen why everyone is so stuck on Reggie back there. he makes me nervous as hell every punt.

1. We DID use AD on kickoff returns... when he asked us to. He only got in on a few before the collarbone injury and Stoops didn't want to risk re-injury in the Fiasco Bowl.

2. DeMarco has returned kickoffs and said on SoonerSports.com that he's "not ready for that yet" when they asked him about punt returns. He's an awesome returnman. He had a near 50-yarder with one man to beat against Texas and took one all the way at Tulsa.

3. We seem to have hit a slump as a team. Hartley's not on his A-game, Reggie's not on his A-game, Sam's had a tough time the last two weeks, the OL is struggling on everything but pass protection and we're back to the dropsies. That's where leadership and coaching will pick you back up. See 2005 and 2006. My opinion is we'll be alright with Bob on the sidelines and with a week to figure out where OUr mojo went.

Hopefully the confidence he gained from sealing the victory at ISU + the week off to recover from any injuries will put Hartley back on track for the rest of the season.

He's not doing bad according to the coaches. He apparently is hitting field goals better now than ever. It just so happens that for every 100 he kicks, his 15 or 16 misses happen on gameday. It's tough when all you're asked to do is kick FGs and extra points and you hit a slump. No offense to him, he's a good kicker and apparently a good leader. He's just been kinda... off this season. Still has hit some really nice shots, but nowhere near the "best kicker EVAR" we all thought he'd be. Just goes to show you can't go out on a limb and predict success based on potential.

Best of luck to him... regardless of what happens this year... he's gonna make some BANK next year. The NFL loves guys who can hit 70-yarders and boom it through the endzone.

There is no way he will ever play for money on Sunday, unless you are betting on pick-up games. He is a talentless hack. He was very lucky last year and I believe the team attitude comes out in the kicker. I like our chances but this team needs to step it up or we could lose 2 more games. I was looking for a missed extra point at Iowa State for Garrett.

These have to be two of the dumbest things I've ever read on this board. First, I think you would have a hard time finding any "taltentless hacks" on OU's roster. Second, I don't know where to begin on the second sentence but I am sure some posters will have a field day with that one.

You have a realy short...

memory. Hartley started this year on the Groza watch list. He ended last year as a Groza finalist. And why the hell do you think a team's attitude comes out in its field goal kicker?

How about Mosis Madu? I have no clue if he can catch a ball dropping down out of the air at him any better then Reggie Smith can, but he's not doing anything else so why not put him to work? If this is a stupid suggestion then forget I said it. ;)

I am a big Hartley fan but he couldn't handle the attitudes of Lofton and English. Their rage would kill him if he tried to channel it.

reggie has always been off. he sucks when it comes to the return game. he fields the ball as hes going down on his but and hes scared to get hit. if he doesnt muff the punt against colorado we win. i know the team played terrible that game but if reggie fields the punt we run the clock down and we win.

Criticism of players = ok. As in "Hartley has not been as accurate lately. I wonder if his problem is mental or if it's due to a nagging injury?"

Saying things like "he is a talentless hack" = have a vacation. I'd give you red-spek but I see that has been taken care of.

I do not think we will see Demarco fielding punts. The philosophy of the punt return team is to keep the defense on the field, as much as possible, so that they can move quickly into a normal coverage call in case of a suspected fake attempt by the offense. So if there is to be speculation on this front, it should probably be confined to the two-deep defensive back-field. And Smith is the best choice, for sure. Maybe they could slip DM back there on fourth and long (10+) when a fake is far less likely. But that would be tough because his lack of experience fielding punts in a real game could be a serious liability.

Perkins was so beautiful to watch.

ok you pulled that one out of your rear end. if thats true then wny do most teams around the country have a wide out or a running back returning punts? its because you want a return man who is good with the ball in his hands. perkins was just that a good player with the ball in his hands. and reggie smith SUCKS!!!! the guy is a vagina when it comes to fielding punts

Let me qualify my statement: unless it's overwhelmingly clear that someone is a game-breaker at returning punts, then the nod will go to the defensive back. always.

Regardless, if you think Reggie Smith sucks, then what comes out of my rear is far more solid than what comes out of your head, you loose-stool-for-brains.

The name calling is so un-called for. I agree that i am nervous EVERY time Reggie fields a PR, but that is the coaches decision. They know tons more about the team than we do. They aren't making him the return man because they feel sorry for him. If they thought someone would do better, that person would be in. i wish i felt more confident in the PR's, but that is something that we will deal with and hope to improve on.

I say dumb things pretty often (no confirmation needed) but hopefully not meanspirited.

Needless.
