Citizens voting away their freedom in exchange for the promise of cash. Really sad.

I wonder if at some time in the future, he'll get hit over the head and this worm-like creature will wiggle out of his ear (ala Star Trek - The Wrath of Khan) and we'll find out some alien was controlling him...

This sounds more plausible.

That is pretty much how he was elected into office.

Here it just works the other way, the ones in office taking the money.
